Barry thank you and this is a 240D according to the VIN decode it was a NA 4cyl diesel but has been swapped to a 300TD turbo diesel engine....I will see tomorrow what this other diff has stamped on it.

Thank you again...

I found the 307 diff is pretty useful with a 300d motor. Taking off is a little tricky but if you don't live in San Fransisco you'll probably be fine. with that gear and a five speed od the car would get 35 highway with regularity and if not driven very fast....like 60, it'd top 40 mpg on occasion.

..I also have a 427 Cobra replica with an aluminum chassis.

I dont mind the 4spd, but the engine does need some more room to relax...thats for sure.

I have a 1977 300d with an automatic. I suspect a 3.07 would work out okay. Whatever the current ratio is does not seem all that good. The engine is spinning a little faster on the highway than I like. The N/A engine seems to pull fairly well for what it is. I suspect the original rear end is a 3.58?

I was thinking. Pull the 3.07 out of the 1984td for it and put a 2.88 in the 84 turbo. Before any rear end change I would do a comprehensive tune up on the car it is intended for. Putting a lower ratio on an anemic engine is unlikely to make you happy.

We may be starting to enter the period where far less used parts are available for the 123s. My area for example has really dried up.

I believe the 358 was used in the 280e. The 300 NA used a 354 IIRC.

Excellent. Check it out and if good, use it. They are rebuildable for the most part. If a pinion bearing is needed, it unfortunately takes an obscure case stretcher tool.
