Nice!!! Good to see people are still rebuilding them and keeping them on the road! Some day I'll find another nice 617 vehicle to own....

Thank you. I have the engine back home now, adding accessories before I put it back in.

Good question! I updated the thread.
They ended up balancing the whole engine- pulleys all the way back to the pressure plate, as one. Just like the FSM mentions. FB |

Were there any issues with the head?

Nice thread! It seems that usually when one of these engines gets worn, the car gets scrapped or another car gets scrapped as the effect of being an engine donor.
I have an OM617 turbo engine in a fintail wagon and found a 300D flywheel at a wrecking yard so the car can keep its column shift manual transmission. I removed the flex plate at one point and couldn't find any markings. On top of it all, I'm not sure if I put it back on in the correct orientation. And then on top of that, the flex plate has chunks missing from it because the sheet metal triangle on it that couples it to the torque converter sheared and the chunks of metal did a real number on all the parts. So, even if I have it clocked correctly, if the flywheel is match balanced to it, it still may not be correct. I have a feeling I'll need to take the engine apart to have the flywheel balanced with the crankshaft and pistons, as you had done. Ugh. But, since your engine was already apart, having the shop balance the parts as a unit was the best move.

Yes. More posts + pics on the way. The exhaust valves were shot and there were rocker arm problems.
The valve wear was normal, but we had a hard time figuring out why the rockers had already been repaired. It's a mystery how a car that otherwise seems so well taken care of could develop such wear at low miles. I'll post more in a bit. FB |

Thanks for keeping this going!
If you don’t mind me asking, what was the final bill? And how much time was involved?
