1999 E300 Diesel engine swap?

Good evening all,

I have a 1999 E300 Diesel that may need an engine swap. Is it possible to swap the non-turbo engine into the turbo engine car and adapt it to become a turbo engine?

Is there a good source for a used turbo engine?

Thank you

Ron

You might be time and money ahead getting another E300 turbo.

Okay and thanks Sixto for your response. What is a good price on a turbo engine?

Check car-part.com. Looks like $1000-2000. These are popular engines for 4x4 swaps so you have competition.

There are a couple of running cars for under $2500 on the opposite coast from you, hence my original suggestion.

What broke?

I ran it with too much oil without knowing. It blew lots a grey smoke and shut off. I still haven't done a compression test. Won't start..

None I noticed the increase in acceleration and the excessive smoke. I coasted off the highway and it shut down. I have changed the oil and filled it to the proper level. The glow plugs have been changed, intake cleaned after this happened.

Sounds to me like a little more investigative work could help before changing an engine

Can you turn the crank by hand?

Yes, the engine turns over but doesn't start. I would rather get it going instead of replacement.

Well that's a good sign

Does the starter spin it at the usual starting speed?

(i.e. could you do a compression test?)

The starter appears to spin it at a slower speed than normal. I have the kit but I've never done a compression test myself?

Ron, I'm interested in your problem! It sounds like you have your hands full. But could you explain a bit further, like how you had "too much oil" and if it really went down with too much oil, how much over do you think it was. Further explanation of yours is "that it was accelerating fast and blew tons of black smoke. Sounds to me like you might have blown a piston, but that is a pretty noisy deal, usually there is no doubt when that happens. Was there engine oil dripping out of the engine, I mean like oil over every where when you stopped. Just trying to get a better grip on your problem.
