Rebuild W123 Girling Rear Brake Calipers???
Just discovered that I have Girling rear brake calipers on my W123. ID'd by the G stamp and the 320327 cast into the caliper. Uses dust cover by FAG rs38551
Are these rebuildable??? If so, which seal kit do you use?? There's plenty of info on ATE and Bendix calipers, but little on Girling. These use the cross bar type pad spring with pins that use cotter pins. All three brands use the same pad size. I just bought Centric 14335003, which is hilariously wrong. RA didn't specify if that was for Bendix or ATE. Definitely no Girling specific rebuild kits to be found anywhere. I've heard that Bendix reseal kits will work on my Girling. True?? Then again i've also seen Bendix reseal kits with the funky metal ring/dust boot retainer spring, which my Girling does not have. Thanks!! |

With the exception of the how the boot and heat shields goes on there is not much difference between the ATE and the Bendix Calipers concerning rebuilding. What determines if they can be rebuilt is the amount of pitting inside of the bore and position and where the pitting is on those areas.
And of course getting the correct seal kit. If they have heat shields take pictures of the positions the heat shields are in so they can be reinstalled in the same positions. I thought the factory service manual had instructions but I am not easily finding (nor am I finding the description to tell the difference between the 3 makes of calipers) them on the old CD set. I do remember that the manual has not to separate the caliper halves although I do that anyway. However, most rebuild kits don't seem to have the O-ring that goes between the 2 halves of a caliper. Where they are speaking of replacing brake pads Bendix and Girling are listed together.ATE (sometimes listed as Teves in the manual, ATE= Alfred Teves Engineering ) |
I am looking in the Manual and as close as you are going to get to rebuild instructions is in section 42-155 of the W123 chassis manual volume one in the books.

However, several years ago I did a print screen and copied the pic to my computer It has Caliper Kit, brake caliper repair kit, 123.133, Girling, Rear, 143.35009 (that is the centric part number) I hope the catalog site opens up for your as it is from like 4 years ago. I have ATE brakes and the centric ATE caliper repair kits come with the O-ring that goes between the 2 halves. I don't know if the girling kit also has that but if I remember correctly you can access a picture of the kit. Calipers are kind of assemble in the reverse of dissemble. But that requires you to note the position of heat shields if there is any and or cutouts on the pistons if there is any. The way the dust boot fits/interfaces with the heat shield on the Bendix type is different then the ATE or Girling.Some have said some of the caliper kits are not coming with new heat shields. |

Dude, finding that info is super difficult! I plugged in my car data (83' 300D Turbo, usually i use 300TD) and the Centric website only shows the Bendix and ATE rebuild kits. Knowing of your part number, i started pecking around. When you input 300D, not 300TD, it offers the Girling rebuild kit and your part number as an option. I'm going to find one of these kits and try it! Thanks!!! Oh yea, and... I popped all of the caliper pistons out. Everything cleaned up fantastic, no pitting on the caliper bores or the pistons. Just torn dust covers and some minor surface rust on the pistons. I chucked up an 18mm deep socket with a few layers of masking tape in my drill, then pushed a piston onto it. Took some 1000 grit sand paper to the piston while it was spinning and all of the crap polished out perfectly. |

The wagon IIRC uses same pads as a sedan but has a slightly larger piston in the caliper to provide more braking power as the wagon is heavier in the back. I believe using sedan calipers will work fine, though with a bit less braking capability, as long as you change both over to the same spec.
