TimingChain,Lifters,Injectors and GlowPlugs Today!
 
Today is the day. Finally got all the parts and tools in place. Waking up in this rainy morning in SC about to go out and get it done.

I’ll be doing a little engine refreshment work on my ‘92 300D. At 375,000 miles she’s gotten a little smoky and a little stinky. I’ll go ahead and check the compressing and chain stretch again before I start but surely it hasn’t gotten any better since I checked it last when i first got this car at 235k miles. Chain stretch was around 2-3 degrees then and compression was good. I do have a totally rebuilt and refreshed head here and gasket set but I’m still going to hold off on that for now.

Today’s docket is set for
Rebuilt injectors from diesel fuel injector guru
New lifters from Ina
Elring timing chain
And Bosch durotherm Glow Plugs
I’ll report back as I go along and after I get it wrapped up.

While you're at it you should REALLY do a leakdown test. It will essentially determine if you really need to put the rebuilt head on or if it can wait. I've done everything you mentioned with the exception of the timing chain and my car is STILL smokey with the stank unburnt diesel smell.

For you to plan on doing all this at once along with potentially replacing the head indicates you are extremely well versed with working on these diesels, I just wanted to hopefully help you avoid wasting time and money like I did :)

Don't forget to check the FSM with respect to how the chain tensioner works (different from a OM616 / non turbo OM617 just in case you're used to running on old fashioned technology)

The chain tensioner on these is nothing special, merely a spring-loaded plunger that's hydraulically pumped up. No ratchet or anything internal like the M10x engines.

No ratchet - sure? I thought they had the same as the M10X engines

Nope. No ratchet in the OM60x tensioners. Easy peasy.

Timing chain by IWIS. I’ve had it for over a year waiting to do this job.

Small issue: new timing chain had bit of surface rust on it where it had been out in the garage for a while.
I’m thinking it will be fine to just clean it off and go.

Thoughts?

If you're in the habit of sending oil to have it analysed then bear this in mind!


For small specks:- I would clean it by using something like a rust killing penetrating oil and a rag


For real surface rust I'd go for a new chain

Use Phosphoric acid and a brass brush if it's light surface rust. Or if you don't want to the brush, let it sit in the acid overnight, dry it, then quickly dip it engine oil.

Update: Got everything set up and ready to go.

Pulled the intake apart to get down to the glow plugs. Did a little cleaning while i was in there

Got the Glow plugs and injectors done but stopped short of doing the timing chain. I was feeling a little unsure about how to use the timing chain tool. i ended up using the only master link that i had breaking and re-connecting the chain on a spare engine just so i could gain a little more knowledge about the tool. currently waiting for another master link to arrive
