w124 rear wheel bearing job suddenly sideways

with work shut down for holliday period, i decided to tackle the failing rear bearing.

not having the tools to do it on the car, i remove the carrier & bring it to a local machine shop who r&r s it with my 'help.'

$50. job done.

get everything back together and wouldn't you know: caliper wont line up straight.

now i have to take it all apart again, get rides to work until its fixed.

somebody tell me a funny story to cheer me up?

You could have rented the FWD bearing installer plates and jackscrew tool from autozone and could have done it in place. (eat some wheaties first and buy a 3/4 ratchet with a reducer to turn the jackscrew nut of that tool)

I think what happened here is that they used the ears of the caliper mount as the reaction point while pressing the bearing. I prefer to use a cylinder like a core case from an old starter. or a heavy black pipe.

Yup, I've made that mistake myself...

Tell me it isnt a wagon...

At least the sedan rears are easily sourced...

Wagon... not so much.

I made that mistake on my camry, then I set off to buy a spindle - which cost me abt 25 dollars lol - and some ancient junked starters with steel field coil holders. Made it easy on the press.

I rented the plates and screw set for another job and found that its kind of easier on some cars like ford fusions where you have to fight the BMW type split arm lower suspension. -

update

picked up a hub assembly from a w190 last week for $20 from a yard at the other side of the state, got it mostly installed last weekend in 20 degree F weather.

finished up today...

after 2 weeks of driving wife's Honda Fit & catching rides here & there, am happy to get behind the wheel of my smokey, rusty trusty benz.

feels so good

thank you to all the members who have contributed to the knowledge base here that have made it possible for me to get it done

i have learned a lot, as they say
