Parts will always be available for these old benzes, just not at the price you want to pay.
I needed front axles for my 93 4matic. NLA. Mercedes dealer said they would happily make them for me for $2700 each. I wasn’t interested in spending that much on my car so I let it go. The way I see it, the only thing keeping you from fixing your car is the lack of funds. Bit of a side note: a lot of people say that the older cars are better built etc. have you driven a w212? I have a 2010 e63, and I can assure you the build quality is every bit as great as any w126 or w124 I ever had. I liked the car so much I just bought a 2011 e350 4matic wagon. The days of me driving a car that smells like mildew, pees oil on my driveway, and has mediocre a/c are over. I honestly feel sorry for some of you who have practically devoted their lives to keeping a pos 40 year old car that will never be worth much. You occupy your weekends fixing, your days b.s ing on this forum, and hoarded your garage and house with scrap metal. If you died tomorrow, is that how you want to be remembered? Are you really ok with leaving that much “stuff” (scrap) for your family to deal with? I’m not trying to get digs at anyone, look at my post count, I was one of them. I also do estate liquidations and I can tell you 100% unless it’s brand new in the box it will go to the scrap yard when you die. And im going to charge your family a premium to get rid of all that crap.

How about taking a stab at the oil check valve issue? Personally I was thinking doing something like this guys setup but with an inline check valve to replace the function of the original.

Lots of critical stuff has gone NLA. As an intro, try to find an exhaust part for a 190D Turbo, or a lower radiator hose for the same. I have my spares, and after that the car is done.

I have a whole set of shelving in my shed full of random W126 and W123 parts, as well as some more in my basement storage room, but if I went and tried to sell any of it I bet it would be a pain, and I'd probably get hardly any $$ for it. I even have two complete good condition W126 original rear window glass! And an entire W123 300D OEM exhaust in great shape....list goes on.
Hard to find good quality new parts is one of the reasons I retired out my W126 420sel, it was getting too expensive to keep throwing parts at the suspension for it to be worth it. Had a pair of upper control arms that lasted barely 1.5 years till the rubber was shot in both the bushing and the ball joint boots (creak creak creak). $$$ I went from my 14-17mpg 420sel to a 33mpg GLK250 diesel....and its been awesome!

When I say the older cars are built better, I mean the parts are so much heavier and substantial. On new cars the parts are flimsy, delicate, and easy to break. You don't get the bank-vault sound closing the door on a new Mercedes anymore. The cars are built by accountants these days, and they try to shave cost any way they can. I've not driven a Mercedes newer than a W126, but I can say that a w116 drives better than a W126. Other brands of new cars I've driven were absolutely terrible and it seemed like I couldn't keep them straight on the road and maintaining a constant speed was challenging.
Some people have had bitter experiences with older cars, but mine does not smell like mildew, does not leak a drop except for the transmission because there is one seal that cannot be replaced without rebuilding it, and the turbo seems to have a bit of an oil leak. My air conditioning is as good or better than any new car--R-12 works very well. Some people know the price of everything, but the value of nothing. I personally don't care what my car is worth in money. I care about its value in the quality of the vehicle. I cannot get this same quality and style in anything new. Fortunately for me, I am not a "hoarder" (just store some spare parts in a shed) and would be happy to own a new car if anything comparable was on the market, but there is not. Any liquidator who will send a very rare restored coachbuilt fintail wagon to the scrap yard is a fool, but I wouldn't put it past people. The bitterness and toxicity that's growing in this forum is incredible. I miss how it was ten years ago when you could get practically every nut and bolt for these cars. Then ten years later it ends like this... Being in the minority is really frustrating, but I'm not going to give in and conform to everyone else's mold. If a car maker doesn't build what I want, they won't have my business. I'll keep driving the cars they made when they made them the way I like them.

Squiggle dog, drive a w212. I cannot convince you on the style, if you like vintage You like vintage. I will say that my e350 has that bank vault feeling that my w126 had. The quality is there, the style is in the eye of the beholder.
Of course I would never scrap a complete, or even mostly complete car. The parts is what im talking about. It would all get scrapped.

Now I feel a bit guilty. I recently renewed my serpentine belt shock absorber and pulley and the dealer had both but I went for aftermarket at about half price.

I am currently having no issues getting anything I need for my W210 at the dealer. I just have to wait a couple days for them to get it in for me.
I have noticed that they stock nothing for this car beyond the basics (wiper blade, filters, etc) and everything needs to be ordered. I think they have a US East and US West warehouse. The US East warehouse is in Jacksonville FL so we get things in about 2 days. It’s a little better for my 2008 W211 and W164. More things on hand but still have to wait for the more unusual parts. Had to recently replace the two fuel hoses landing on the fuel filter as one of them was weeping, probably from too many removal/replacement cycles. Hose is perfectly molded to the application and no tolerance to trim off and re-terminate. They had one hose in stock but the other one they had to order. Over the years I have bought many parts from the sponsor but since everything has to come from California, I have found the dealer will usually beat the delivery date to SC. The MBCA 10% discount helps as they are a little more expensive. It also makes my life at tax time easier, we have to declare all out of state purchases and pay our local 8% tax on our state income tax return at the end of the year. Hoping that giving the dealer the business is my little contribution to keeping the interest on the older models alive.

I personally enjoy getting dirty and fixing the issues, kind of like some people play with a rubix cube, the problem solving is relaxing. My wagon is not a needed card. I own a 2010 c class with 80k, a 2003 Kompressor with 90K, and 2005 XC90 173k and a 2007 Toyota Landcruiser with 70k. The wagons a fun car. But, I still enjoy taking it out and driving it around. It gets more attention than any of the other cars and the only car with personality. Too top it off, my 10 year old has already laid claim to it as her first car when she gets old enough to drive so it will go on for some time to come. |

I'm just reminiscing here, but I remember ten years ago it was the perfect storm--the economy was bad and gas prices were extremely high, which caused vintage diesel Mercedes to become very popular as they were cheap, could run on free fuel (waste oils) and many could be found in decent condition. So, there were lots of people buying parts for them and Mercedes and OEM brands were likely making decent money supplying parts.
But then it eventually went downhill as people started choosing inferior parts brands which hurt Mercedes' and OEM brands' parts sales, gas prices dropped significantly, and the economy improved so people no longer felt the need to keep their old free fuel vehicles going. Running on improperly processed waste oils and minimal maintenance also did in many cars. In just a few years, these cars went from something everyone had to have to being just junk cars. No doubt all this has effected the supply of parts. It's discouraging to think about. I think the most unfortunate thing about it is that Mercedes WAS doing such a good job at offering replacement parts for their cars and now that's changing for various reasons.
