Huh?

No one said remove the vacuum system.

A keyed 12 volt source to a normally open vacuum switch.

Neither did I. I just said that doing this workaround would be more effort than its worth.

That said, I was lucky enough to find a unused spare key hidden on my W123, and I made several copies of it. Works perfect, even on the 300+ mile tumbler.

All the W123 facebook groups have been posting this today. Looks like Mercedes made a "parts request" page. If enough people want the same part, they will look into remaking it. Just reposting the info here.

Lack of parts just makes it harder, it doesn't stop anyone. The water pump blew up on my old tractor, so I got on grainger for new bearings & seals. Just have to make your own rebuild kits.

Ball joints can be repoured, others adapted, etc.

This was how I ran my 300D. Used a vacuum switch from a junkyard climate control module. Easy-peasy.

Have a look on A&I products and , lots of reissued old tractor parts.

Central Tractor / Farm and Fleet used to have a parts division in IA even after the retail stores went bankrupt on the early 2000 but I can't find that parts is still in operation.

If you come up with water pump parts you can't get, try Kellogg Automotive Kellogg Automotive - Water Pump Rebuilding - Water Pump Parts - Obsolete Parts Manufacture I bought a John Deere water pump rebuild kit from then and it was just fine. The also will custom rebuild odd pumps.

If my key breaks I am screwed

I recently bought a key at the dealer for my 300SDL for $35, and I asked them about keys for other cars, and they said that the pre 98 cars with the RFID, the keys are gone forever and it's pretty much is the end of the car once all the keys fail or get lost, but otherwise keys are currently available for pretty much everything else.

Don't despair - Here are 3 constructive things you can do right now:

A] For all NLA classic parts with volume potential, please email Bernick with your request: bernick.alvarez@mbusa.com

B] Mercedes also has a demand based request tool. Two easy steps:

1) Click this link:
https://partssearch.mercedes-benz-classic.com/parts/demand

2) Enter your part number. For example, enter A1158350207 for the W115 heater blower motor. Hit submit.

C] Finally, whatever you do, don't buy parts from Asian manufacturers like Uro. Stick with Lemforder and Mercedes dealer parts. The race to the bottom is perilous for your classic Mercedes vehicle and ours.

You do realize that many diesel guys are cheap and cry about low end parts pricing let alone dealer / classic center parts. Remember the stealer ( their word not mine ) is out to get them and MB wants to eradicate all 30 + year old cars forcing these guys to buy new cars even-though they are not the target market for new cars.

Gents,

I work for MBUSA/Daimler, I can tell you that if a part has potential to move, it will keep being produced. Its really that simple. Definitely work with the classic center but also work with your local dealers. Also the number of parts still available for some of the most posted about models here is staggering.

that being said not everything is available. Just had to get a center drag link from lemförder made in Türkey for the front end refresh on my car, hope it works well.

I think there are a number of parts per model where Mercedes needs to realize that there are no aftermarket options in existence. A great example is the heater blower motor for the W114/ W115. NLA. Don't exist anywhere and owners are left with no option but no have heating or ventilation.

I have less sympathy for folks who like to whine about costs. If its well made, it costs more. Most classic Mercedes parts cost way less even at the dealer than new model parts.

what does the classic center say about that? I can reach out to them myself but they aren't online yet

that sounds terrible. .

NLA classic parts are one of our specialties. The bulk of our catalog consists of basic repair components, but perhaps 15% or so are classic parts for restoration of BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche. Most of these items are very nice, with the proper surface finish and aesthetics. These items are installed on very high-end restorations on a regular basis.
