Directionals Out?

I have an intermittent failure of the directionals. Has happened twice so far.

Hazards work (and show up in dash cluster) during the failure.
Other stalk functions work (brights, wipers) work during the failure.
Failure was on 2.5 hr drive, lasted ~45 mins, just about as the temp was crossing through freezing zone. It was raining.

I haven't been able to replicate at home, but search directions would be either stalk contacts or a fuse? Anyone know if there is a relay that is involved in directionals - manual shows it as part of the combination relay? I had tried to replace combination relay a while ago (bought one but that didn't fit the slot).

I had replaced the stalk 3 years ago with an aftermarket one that seemed an exact fit and has worked fine

I'd check the earthing points under the dash and in the boot / trunk - make sure the rain isn't leaking into the car (for other reasons as well as electrical)

There is probably a relay for the flashers. When I bought my '95 e300 diesel, the flashers did not work. It was one of the relay modules that sits under the fuse box. I bet the w201 is similar to w124 in this respect.

There is no flasher in a later W124, its a light control module bolted to the engine room fuse box, the clicking you hear when you engage the turn signal is a clicker mounted on the gauge cluster itself.

Sounds like you have a water intrusion issue somewhere, check the drain tubes on the sides of the wiper tray, they should be connected properly and actually clean so they drain water into the wheel well cavity. There are quite a few water drains on a W124 which need to be cleaned.
