Sounds like prior to attempting the chain replacement, you had removed the IP and then re-installed it, but managed to get it 180 deg off?

No, I set out to change the glow plugs, injectors, timing chain and lifters all in one go. With no definite plan for what order to do it in. For what ever reason I can’t recall the lifters were last.
When the vacuum pump spring snatched the chain off of the cam gear it lost its timing with the pump and crank. So, I figured I would go ahead and pull the cam for the lifter job and to take that out of the equation for rolling the chain in. Ok, no problem exept... when the chain got all the way back around to connect the ends of the new chain. Crank is on TDC cam goes back in on the marks that make it TDC for the compression stroke on cylinder one but the pump was not at that place. Know what I mean
