-35 cold start in Toronto - 1985 Mercedes 300D original engine

Hey everyone,

I thought I would share this. Coldest day of the year -35 to -38 during the night, not plugged in or started for 16+ hours. I was shocked it started.

-New AGM battery.
-filters, fluids changed often.
-Original engine, not rebuilt.
-valves adjusted every year, well in spec.
-5W40 liqui Molly oil, I use 15W40 in the summer/hot weather.
-last compression test showed 350-400 on all 5 cylinders.
-500,000km approx.
-well maintained at dealer and specialists.

Thats what I was thinking. I would have cycled the glow plugs a few more times.

No need for diesel anti-gel additive? If not at temperatures of -35 to -38 overnight, then when?!

Which 5W-40 Liqui Molly oil do you use? I'm completely unfamiliar with their oils so this isn't a question to start a feud, just trying to learn.

A couple glow cycles more might have cut down on the time, but -30 is really cold. I would love to test my 87 300D in cold weather, but it just doesn't get cold where I live.

Starting out from -35F I doubt it would get hot enough in 1-2 mins or less of cranking. I used to do a solid 45-60 seconds often in my 617 when it was under 5F out and the starter never died....even after many years of it.

The bluetec's are boring in comparison for cold starts. One 10ish second glow....turn key, cranks about twice and its running...even well below 0F.

For me the 5w40 oil makes a huge difference. The motor just turned through a couple revolutions to start at -2 F. I just hit the starter right after the glow plug relay opened.

Impressive. Still better to use 2-3 glow cycles...and not trust the idiot light.

If it's going to sit in cold weather for days, then I'll add an additive. There are lots in modern diesel anyway. I followed the owners manual for the W123, where it's stated to actually add 10-15% gasoline to the diesel tank. You can never surpass 30% though.

I made my son drain the tank on my 84SD over .17 gal of gas in an almost empty tank. He shut the pump off and never started the car so I figured 5 gal of diesel would be enough to handle what was left.

I don't car what the FSM says. I'll use kero but never gas.

I will keep this in mind, and use Kero next time in that case. I don't want to risk anything bad with this car.

That's like 1% gas if you fill her up the rest of the way with diesel...that's so negligible you'd never know and neither would the car...
