You can pull the older automatic cars too but you need to get up to about 30 mph or so. If you have compression and fuel pulling it should start it.

Apparently you can tow-start a diesel Mercedes. Here is a how-to from my FSM. This is from section 00-9000 D for a 300SD.

can you do it solo down a driveway or with a friend giving you a little push ? No, so therefore considered to be unable to push/clutch start it.

Mercedes says starting cold engine:depress throttle to floor Release, glow, crank.
The injection pump has a start mode, increased fuel to start. Just pushing down
throttle some at cranking speed does not increase fuel.
Note:the spring on the start mode, fuel increase is weak,if oil is to heavy will prevent
pump from moving to start mode. There is no fuel increase at cranking speed by pushing
throttle.So(one cold morning) no start.

See above. FSM says push the accelerator fully to the floor and release it only after diesel engine has started.

Obviously you can push it with another vehicle to get it started; tow starting has always seemed dangerous to me.

Hi,not referring to push starting, Starting Cold engine. Most do not know the
injection pump has a cold start mode nor is it common knowledge that pushing on throttle at cranking speeds does NOT increase fuel injected.

Friends don't let friends use photobucket.

Use imgur.com instead.

when it was real cold here about ten days ago (5 degrees F.) I tried the owners manual recommended method of holding down the accelerator all the way while cranking. It didn’t work, just seemed to slow the cranking speed down considerably. If I left the pedal alone it cranked for about ten seconds and caught, then needed a light pressure on the pedal to keep running for the first 30 seconds or so.

Mine starts better with full synthetic oil. It is the difference between go and no go.

Did this ever get resolved? I wrote that when the OP got his car running again he needed to post what worked to close this issue. The OP said he would. Well? I'm still waiting.
