1984 300DT: could a bad fan clutch cause water pump to go bad?
Water pump blew tonight, leaking like a sieve. Obviously the car needs a new fan clutch. question: could a bad fan clutch cause the water pump to go bad?

Only if it's loose and wobbling around. Otherwise, probably just coincidence. You'll be removing one to replace the other, time to replace both.

Likely or even somewhat likely? No. I would rephrase this: "probably just coincidence" to: almost certainly coincidence. |

I have some water proof "Flex Tape" (infomercial product). I need to use the car to go get the water pump at the parts store.
Question: Could I wrap the water pump with the water proof Flex Tape to temporarily stop the pump from leaking.....at least enough for a short drive? |

I doubt the tape will stop the leak.

Back the pressure cap off a notch so the system doesn’t build pressure and maybe leaks less. You should be fine if you take it easy. Watch the temp gauge and check coolant level as often as you can.

Does it matter at all? You need a new clutch and a new pump. Unless you were planning to reinstall the bad clutch, the question is irrelevant.

I have Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker and also Permatex RTV Silocon Gasket Maker......which would you recommend for the water pump gasket?

What should I use to clean the surfaces? Permatex recommends cleaning both mating surfaces then spraying with Permatex Surface Prep before using the Anaerobic Gasket Maker on the water pump gasket.

Clean the surface so it's butter smooth before you do this with a scotch brite pad.
