1987 Mercedes 300 SDL Odometer Issues???
Good evening all
Today, I helped a buddy find and purchase a beautiful dark blue SDL. After picking the car up and driving around he noticed the miles where adding up at an excessive rate. After driving maybe 30ish miles, the odometer show roughly 100 miles had been traveled. This increase in milage is reflected on the odometer and the trip meter part of the odometer. The car shows 355,000ish miles. Considering what has been discovered the actual milage may be much lower. The question is what should be the culprit? What should we check first? Any input is appreciated. Thanks for your time... Ron Richmond, VA 23220 I forgot to mention the car was aquired for $600.00. Yippy on the serious deal...

Probably has the wrong odometer in it from a vehicle with a different gear ratio in the final drive.

W126 is electronic.

The speedo that is normally in the SDL is electrical as mentioned. Not sure if the speedy is original to the car, because it was just picked up today.

Is the speed displayed actually correct? If so, someone may have replaced the odometer gears and used the wrong tooth count. If speed is also wrong, the speedo is incorrect for the gear ratio in the car. Speed and Odometer run off the same electronic signal.

The speed displayed appears to be correct.

If the speed is right, I'd be leaning towards the gears having been replaced and now being the wrong tooth count.
