BOT Bring a Trailer, Kijiji, Craigslist lies - MPG Lies

I just wanted to say be careful out there when buying these vehicles - there are so many people who state their OM616/OM617 that they are selling gets 40-50MPG. These cars got decent mileage for the year, and at the time they were new, but it's more like 24-27. Maybe max 28-30 brand new off the lot, if you have a 240D OM616 and never went above 55 MP/H.

It's just funny when you see people with these older W123 or W126, stating that their diesel gets 35-40MPG. Outright lies. And yeah, only 240,000k miles, "barely broke in", "will go a million", but they don't mention the odometer hasn't worked in 20 years. lol. Crazyness.

Just yesterday, I filled up my 240, and it took exactly 10 gallons, and I traveled 250 miles, some highway, but most around town. I also don't get much more than 25 MPG with the 300D's or TD. So yes, I agree that MPG statements are usually overblown.

I'd make a deal with the seller:

We will connect a 1 gallon fuel tank to the car, use GPS to measure a steady 55 mph speed / distance covered. If the car gets less than 40 MPG, I get the car for free. If the car does get 40 MPG or greater, I will pay 2x for the car.

Same goes for the " bullet proof " windows on the W140

I'll take that bet. How much money you got?

MPG

Before the 4 speed swap but after the KKK swap, when doing a steady 65 mph on the freeway, my 83 300D would return 27-29 mpg, AC running or not. I’ve cracked 30 a few times on a longer trip. Add city driving/short stops and real world average is in the ballpark of 25-27 mpg.

I generally get worse fuel consumption in my 87 300TD. I suspect it is mostly because I tend to drive faster in the wagon, as both cars are mechanically very well sorted.

My W123 240D w/ NA 616 w/ 4 spd manual got 28-32 on one motor, 28-30 on another 616.
My W123 300TD w/ NA617 w/ 4 spd manual gets 25-57 on mixed commute, maybe 30 on the hiway, both with summer diesel.

funny story I saw, on the first gen mazda 6 (03 year) - if you swap the gauges with a 08 year, the gauges dont work right, one of those "not right" things is that the odometer runs twice as fast.

so technically the car goes from 22 mpg to 44 mpg - but suddenly every road is twice as long too

You are only getting 35.2 MPG according to your link, this is hardly 40 - 50 .

The parameters are a cold start, highway driving not a pre warmed up engine / down hill not to exceed up hill / not already at speed when test starts / no tire pressure beyond factory specs.

City/Highway average over the last 40k miles. Highway only driving on the other hand...

And none of these were 55mph.

Pussy.
That's fine, I've got plenty of other tricks up my sleeve

So again, the question is how much money you got for our little wager?

Your car has been swapped to a manual. This is a classic false equivalence.

Barely cracking 40 (and averaging 35) with a manual and OM603 is not the same as getting 40-50 with a OM617 bolted to an auto.

I never said anything about 40-50, I'm talking about his little bet.

Still no mention of how much money he's got for our little wager. I'm not sure can afford it lol.

Video, or it didn't happen

If you do follow through with this bet, I and many others want to see video, or we can assume it didn't happen

Regardless, you're making a false equivalence with a modded car.

Your 1987 300D couldn't break 40mpg at 55mph in stock form. I have one in perfect shape, running all synthetic fluids and I've hit 32 once on a long level highway at 55-60mph on good summer #2 diesel.

You have inspired me to check the mileage in my grey car.
I should get it running again first... funny how one simple fix disables my stuff for months.

Its a 82 300D, kkk swapped, 4 speed swapped, and 2.87 rear end ratio.

My 80 SD usually averaged around 25 with no highway, mostly all 55mph roads in NY.

Now that I'm in TN I've noticed mpg numbers fall off the edge of the planet in everything I own thanks to hills in every direction and 35ish mph speed limits on most roads I drive.

Don't ask about any of my trucks mpg...
