W201 wiring through firewall?

Hi,

The audio system in my W201 was a nightmare where one of the previous owners had tried to do who knows what to it, so I'm ripping the whole thing out and installing a Pioneer DEH-80PRS and an amp. I need to get a 4awg wire through the firewall into the cabin. It looks like some of the factory wiring runs behind the kick panel on the passenger side, which would be convinient assuming it comes out somewhere near the battery. However looking at that area I can't really figure out where the wires actually come out in the engine bay.

Have any of you guys run a fairly large wire through the firewall of a W201 (190D turbo in particular)? If there's an easier place to drill I don't mind punching a new hole in it.

I ran a 3.5mm vacuum hose in order to operate an economy gauge. This was a 190DT. If you look on the left side, there's a large grommet under the wiper motor. Comes through above the driver's left knee. IIRC, there were positions for four cables, of which only two or three were used. 4 Guage is pretty thick, but maybe it would work.

Cool, I'll check that guy out and see if I can squeak that wire through there. Thanks for the picture!

What's up, OGB? Hands On from IN Forum.

There is a similar grommet on the pass side. My buddy told me he pushed a gutted Bic pen through it to make room and then passed the power cable along with it.

Still need to do audio install in my W201.

Oh hey man, fancy seeing you here I dug around on my car a bit and found that the one Frank mentioned is full on mine, but there's an available space on the passenger side one there. Gonna try to get that wire shoved through there today after work.

Forgot to update this but the grommet under and to the right of the glove box worked for running my amp wire. It was tough to get the wire through the grommet but it came out right behind the battery so it is a very convenient location.

The amp is installed where the first aid kit box used to be. I made a bracket to hang it there since the FA box was empty anyway. The DEH-80PRS is wired in and all the speakers are connected. Still have a fair bit of work to do but I tested it and it works

You can go through the fuse box, the looms run straight from fuses and through into the car and there is plenty of room to poke a length of wire down into footwell.
