Alright, let's get back to the subject at hand. I know it's going through the engine, since it's not leaking, or in the coolant.

I found on a sprinter forum some similar posts with almost identical consumption rates, and leaning toward PCV, so I have a replacement PCV on order.

Thanks DDAY for the air filter tip...easy thing to check.

The oil type I'll take under advisement. There is no way a difference in detergents in the oil can trigger enormous oil consumption like I reported.

"Take it to a shop" I'll also take under advisement. I've done ALL my own work on the 346k miles on my first '05 so far.

It’s not the detergents, the problem is the fact that any oil that is burnt in the engine (due to natural blowby/ring leakage/valve stem seal leakage) will produce waste products. There is a parameter called SPAsh that measures the amount of these waste products.

These products are damaging to the (very expensive) DPF downstream of the engine.

You must use an Emissions System Protection (ESP) oil in this engine otherwise the oil consumed by the engine (at normal consumption levels) will block the diesel particulate filter, resulting in a very expensive repair. The engine requires an oil which meets MB certification 229.52. Mobil 1 0w-30 ESP is one such. Note that there is also MB standard 229.5, which is completely different and not appropriate to your engine.

Uh oh

Just determined that the Macon MB dealer has been putting 229.5 oil in the Bluetec that I've got a thread going on about oil issues/DPF pluggage. It takes the 229.52 oil. The second DPF was a brick. This is one MB calls the "front" exhaust pipe and they have the differential pressure sensor installed on. I think they have been running the 229.5 in it for 180k+ miles which resulted in the brick.

OM642/GL350

Spark,
I was curious as to what "PCV" valve you ordered? The 2011 and up models did away with the diaphram and have a centrifugal separator on the camshaft. Just a open hose from valve cover to turbo intake Y.

I too have now 142k on my 2011 GL350 and have noticed some consumption out of the blue. It normally never uses a drop between 5k mile changes and no leaks, coolant contamination etc. I am speculating on turbo seal rings.

May try going to the 229.51 Pentosin 5/40. Originally my car used the Mobil 1 ESP 5/40 and now all I can get in the MB1 is the 0/30 or 5/30 which I have been using in the OEM oil variety.

I know dirty air filters can cause a spike in consumption as I have seen this on a long trip with alot of bugs/dust. (too much vacuume).

Think I am going to pull the charge air pipe or resonator and see if it has more than the normal oil residual.

Crazy to see 1quart consumption in 2k miles and never see any smoke etc.

That is because it is turning the DPF into a brick.
