Geez what a mess

Driving to work today I started to get a whiff of diesel fuel. It got stronger the more I drove so I finally found a spot to pull over and pop the hood.

Opening the hood I was greeted with the engine and engine bay covered with diesel fuel. The return hose on #3 injector had popped off and the injector was merrily spraying fuel everywhere.

I reconnected it and made it to work. I plan to let the engine cool off for a few hours, then douse the engine with a couple buckets of water to remove the majority of the mess. Then when I get home I will clean off as much of the rest with engine degreaser and a hose. Any other suggestions. Jesus what a mess....

You mean to clean the engine?
If you can wipe the majority of the diesel the rest should just evaporate off when you drive it next time.

Make an extra effort to clean the engine mount. The diesel fuel will turn the rubber into goo if allowed to sit.

NAPA sells some 1/8" fuel line that works well for return line. It is readily available locally, thicker that the stock line and I have never had it leak. I think it was discussed a few ears ago and brought to my attention.

I keep some in a small tool box in the trunk along with fuel filters and tools to change them including a couple pairs of rubber gloves and a rag. No sense having to fix something simple and drive for hours all greasy.

"Geez what a mess"
I thought it was a thread dedicated to my life.

You can use simple green (I would not because I don't like how it smells) Purple Power or some similar stuff that has minor degreasing qualities and put it in a pump sprayer and squeeze the trigger and spray down everything and wash it off after it has a suitable tome to do the job.
Diesel tends to stink for a long time even after you think it is evaporated.

Id actually not clean the diesel off anything that is metal.

Clean it off rubber to the best you can, but Id just wipe it off the metal parts and leave the thin layer... to avoid corrosion on metal surfaces...

That's why I always carry extra fuel line in the trunk

Ya never know when those things will go. I inspect them periodically on the car. They last a really long time, probably 10 years or more but eventually they should be replaced.
