I have a pair of perfect condition 06 E320 CDI's....but often I just prefer to drive the 91 300D. I don't know what it is....something intangible about the look and feel of the car.

You should be able to get it started. I've started mine with it that cold outside, with no heater block. You'll have to insure the following:

-All glow plugs are 3 years old or newer, tested and confirmed working

-the oil has been changed to 5W40 and not 15W40 during the winter. 15W is too heavy during extreme cold and will actually hold the piston rings in extreme cold cranking situations.

-a recent valve adjustment has been performed in the past year or two
-cranking procedure in the manual is followed. Glow until relay turns off and don't stop turning over until it fires. Don't glow twice or three times etc, just kills the battery

-a new OEM Mercedes or similar 900CCA battery is installed

-hold foot down to floor before and while cranking but slowly release as it starts to fire

'83 300CD & '84 Blazer diesel both since 2000. CD occasionally to work, Blazer occaisionally around town. Retired 2010 & mostly drive the CD for its better fuel mileage.

My daily driver is a 1984 Mercedes 300D. I don't have another car laying around. It's been great for five years. I'll hit 200K soon.

I daily drove my 87 300D for over 10 years but the rust got to be too much. I'm still working on restoring it but it turned out to be a bigger project than I intended (life gets in the way plus I'm doing all the "while I've got this apart" stuff). Hopefully will get it done this year and return it to regular use in the pleasant months. After all the effort going into the rust repair I won't subject it to winter any more. But I adored having it as a daily thing to look forward to and hope to get back to that for spring/fall/summer, maybe do some road trips. Right now I have a new Cruze diesel as a daily which is fun and I've gotten used to 60 mpg on the highway, and I'm working on some little stuff to get my Jeep back in order. But nothing compares to the 300D.

You cranking the engine for a minute straight made me uncomfortable.

I drive my 190DT more often thanks to our now snowless winters, about 30K miles a year. Has 452K miles now, may not go much more. But it'll be good to the last drop.

I don't get the "classic" bit though. These are blunt cars, and mostly sedans and wagons. They're meant as dailies, really not much else to do with 'em. The only ones that might be real collectibles are the coupes. I had a coupe at one time, too. WTC fell on it. Still ran well enough to carry itself to the breakers.

my 1985 300D is only just reaching 130,000 miles but it gets driven every day. it's a manual and has a couple of rust holes in the back where the antenna was leaking a few years ago.It needas a polish, a new hose for the aircon, the aircon leaked into the car for years so the floor is rotten under the drivers seat, which is held up by a peice of wood. Left rear wheel bearing is starting to make noise but as long as it starts,it's going to stay as my daily.
It's all pretty funny when you consider that i restore mercs for a living.
oh, and it has a STT turbo set up which has cost me one speeding ticket .

I had a fintail ...a 62 190b. It was this color too and had the turn signals on the fender up by the windshield and a big white steering wheel. Loved that car. Bought it with 50K miles, for $500 in 73, drove it up to 120K miles, collected six hundred insurance from other people running into it and sold it for $350. Best driver deal ever, money wise. It was very rusty down in the floor but the body looked great!

I daily drive my 1984 300D. Just hit the ten year mark since I first bought it last month. I've put 132,000 on it since then. (Original mileage unknown, I bought it with 127k on the clock)

Right now I'm driving about 66 miles round trip to work. I still get around 26-28 mpg, but there have been a few issues along the way.

I had the trans rebuilt about 9 years ago as the front pump seal was leaking pretty badly. The entire front suspension was rebuilt about 5 years ago now. And about a year ago the passenger's side floor rusted through. I've welded in a new pan, but the inner floor still has to be replaced so I've been riding without a passenger seat since then.

Other than those issues, nothing major has happened.

All the MB's in the signature line are, or were daily drivers. Unfortunately, that is the reason the gone ones are gone, rust took them before their time.
The engine from the 83 cd lives on in a Toyota.

I daily my 1979 240D for my commute to and from work (around 15 miles round trip or, if I do school drop-off duties, about 32 miles all in). It's been and good and reliable driver so far, although honestly the mileage is pretty bad on the 240Ds in stop and go traffic.

Engine uses no oil so I have no idea how long this car will run for but its really strong.

My 95 E300 (W124) comes out of hibernation tomorrow. I use it as a daily driver all spring, summer and autumn. Great vehicle!

'91 300D is my daily driver. Bought it 18 months ago from the son of the original owner (113k on the clock). It had been parked for about 5 years and driven very infrequently. So far I've had to replace the front flex disc, radiator, water pump, fan clutch, battery tray, battery, and belt tensioner bits. Finally chased down a vacuum leak (bad 4 way connector just off the vac pump). Transmission feels like a dadgum new car now (and the climate control system now works). Next project: shocks and struts. I plan on driving this car until the wheels fall off.
