To me the hardest diesel Mercedes to find in good condition are 300D 2.5's, for some reason they're all beat to hell and overpriced.
I checked out one in horrendous condition.

W115. 1976 240 D I drive it 44 miles a day. Starts without fail every day even at 15 degrees. I have never been stranded. I averaged about 25 mpg in winter and i let it warm up 10 to 15 minutes before i drive it when cold.

I drove a W126 300SD daily for over 9 years, then a W126 420SEL for the warm part of 7 years....and a W201 in the cold for 5+ years. We also had a T203 (203 wagon) but it was too small so we got the Metris.
After getting the Metris I wanted something nicer for myself so I got the GLK.
