Also swapped the turbo and egr solenoid/transducers. Didn't notice a difference. I'll know more once the egr valve is cleaned and the valve is seated.

I plugged the vacuum hose going to the egr vacuum diaphragm and the vacuum hose coming out of the egr solenoid/transducer. Was I correct to do this?
I'm going to remove the egr valve but can't find a egr valve gasket for a 1999 Mercedes e300. I need someone to identify a source.
Thanks in advance,

There isn’t a gasket. There’s an oring you can get from Benz. The only gasket in that vacinity is a intake gasket.

Good to know.
Any tips to remove the intake? I've got a 95 e300 and it isn't a problem. But I'm thinking there's a few extra steps for the 99.
Or is it possible to remove the egr valve without removing the intake manifold?

It’s easier on an OM606.962 turbo than an OM606.910 or 912 n/a engine.
One 10 mm bolt up from underneath (charge air pipe bracket)
The band clamp around the EGR pipe (reachable from the top)
One hose on manifold pressure port (should have a clamp since it’s under manifold pressure)
One hose on EGR valve (no clamp since it’s vacuum)
14 x T40 bolts to cylinder head
Pull straight up, the EGR valve stays with the manifold
There is an o-ring on the inside of the EGR valve where it mates with the charge air pipe, not too expensive from what I remember.

Update
Found a scanner that pulled the cel codes. Replaced the egr transducer and maf sensor. Cleared the codes. Car runs clean and has mucho power.
Side note. Previous owner spilled some diesel on the carpet. Smell was pretty bad. Read somewhere that Listerine would get rid of the smell. Well I had to spray (fairly heavy) 3 times and let the carpet dry between applications. The smell went away.

I'm glad you put in this update. I believe I am having the exact same issue, as I have an OM606 with no boost and no obvious reason why.

What scanner did you use to pull/reset the codes? I suspect very much that I will need to do this. Hoping it can be bought on eBay for a few quid. Also hoping it's nothing more serious than a MAF sensor.

I bought this scanner maybe 2006. So I'm not sure it's still available.
"Memo Scanner obd2 or obdll" is the brand name. Auto diagnostic tool series.
The codes that are probably your problem.
P0100 points to MAF sensor.
P0243 points to turbo transducer. P0400 points to EGR transducer.
I tried my good scanner and it wouldn't communicate with the ecm.
Finally thought I should try my cheap scanner I bought to work on a dodge and it kicked out the codes. And after I replaced the failed sensors I was able to clear the codes. The cheap scanner will only kick out the codes. You'll need to look them up in the book provided.
Good luck.

Follow up to my issue... exactly the same conclusion. MAF replaced and the car runs far cleaner and with more power than ever. In my case there was no code logged indicating a MAF failure.
