How do you remove the needle on a W126 speedometer?
I'm looking to change the face on a spare speedometer that I have and was wondering if there is a special technique to remove the needle from the front, or if the shaft as well as the needle needs to be removed from the inside. Thanks

Use 2 spoons on either side to pry it out. Tape the surface where the spoon will rest on the dial to prevent scratching. Press on the handles and the needle will pop out. The problem is to calibrate the new needle. It is tricky.

Does it need to be calibrated with a W123 also? When I replaced my speedo needle, I just set it roughly in place, then hooked up the cable and went for a drive and noted the speed reading when I was going 45 mph via GPS (speedo said I was going 55). When I got home I pulled the speedo back out and spun it with a drill up to 55 mph. Then I had someone pull the needle off and set it at 45 while I kept the drill at a constant speed.
Always wondered if it's accurate through.

When I said calibration, I meant to use a drill to spin it to note the speed. Then replace the needle and use the same drill again to set the needle. W126 gen 2, not sure about gen 1 uses electronic pulses and has no speedo cable. So it is tricky to set the needle with the drill.

Gen 1 W126 also uses electric pulses.
I'll try to mark the shaft before popping the needle off.

Lift the needle over the 'zero' peg, it will come to a 'position' & stop. (the internal spring controlls this). Make a mark under the needle with a pencil, or first put a piece of tape there & mark it. When putting needle back on, align it with this mark, then back over the peg. The drill thing is a neat trick, the above gets you very close first.

I installed my spare instrument cluster this afternoon and the odometer on that speedo is broken too, LOL. It's a shame because I'm just 2K short of 300K. Can anyone recommend a good GPS app for tracking mileage?
