1982 240D Outer Tie Rod Confusion
So I am replacing the out tie rod ends on a 1982 240D and ordered some from Napa but ended up being too big. I assume I need the 14mm version and these were 16mm??
So I have Autozone ordering 2 of the 14mm since they are open tomorrow. Now I am confused because the parts guy order 2 left hand thread outer tie rod ends. Do I need RH and LH threads? I looked on this site, ********, and many others and they have both variants of 14mm, 16mm, RH thread, and LH thread. I am so confused. The part numbers on the old tie rods are the same they are #022000040012 Any help would be appreciated. |

Can't help you with your question, but I would like to let you know that Autozone tie rods are crap in my experience. Longest I've had them last is 1 year, last one I got lasted ~3 months.
I just bought complete Uro tie rods from Arizona, they come as a complete inner/outer/center assembly.

Just check your car. You should be able to see the hand of the exposed thread as it sits, or if you've removed them and thrown them out, by looking at the tie rods.

Also speaking from experience, working with rust belt tie rods is misery. Whole tie rod assemblies with inner, outer and a new tie rod are not that much.

Hmmm. When doing my 300cd, the new tie rods I bought from Phil were much smaller in diameter than the OE ones that were on the car. I actually kept the OE ones because of that, and have them someplace in my garage... IIRC...
I cant tell any difference in use, but the larger diameter ones are obviously more beefy. In hindsight, I would have just bought all new ends from Phil, and gotten the large diameter ones to put into the shaft center sections. My car is a CA car, after all, so they dont have rust or salt issues. Would it matter in the slightest though? Doubtful...

Seems like if they do the job dimensionally and fit in without modification of anything they would be ok. I agree vigorously to buy a total tie rod with two new ends if you are in the rust belt.
