Yes, the output shaft can be effectively disconnected.

When you put the transmission lever in park, does that lock the rear axle? If no, then check to make sure the shift lever is still connected by the linkage to the transmission. If still connected, then your transmission has failed.

How about reverse? If you have reverse, the B2 piston has failed.

Step one is to stick to your original thread rather than starting many.( 3 additional so far )

Step two is to diagnose not guess before wanting to buy parts.

I agree with post #2

If it turns out to be a B2 piston issue there is more room to change it on an 80's SD and Diesel Giant has pictorial instructions.

I lost forward motion once and changing the transmission Filter and fluid restored it for not quite another year and then the B2 piston broke.

If you decide to remove the B2 piston cover to take a look be sure to have a pan available to catch the fluid that is going to come out.

Note that besides the B2 Piston itself there is a lip seal and a bushing that needs changing. The seal itself can cause issues. The old busing is on mine aluminum and the new bushing is nylon. And of Couse there is an O-ring that seals the cover.

I am forgetting about something. The B2 band has also been known to crack. You can sometimes tell by removing the B2 piston and pushing on the band to see if it still springs back.
