I've found that once the staked part of the nut is bent out so it can turn, hitting one of the edges of the outer notches with a punch and hammer loosens them up every time, and then I replace them with the new 12-point nuts that are available, which I stake in place.

I took an angle grinder to a cheap 1-7/8” (= 46mm?) socket to make my own. I don’t know where it is.

They are available from the forum's sponsor. Albeit, a little pricey. However, if simple methods don't get it done, sometimes the correct tool saves you money and time in the long run.
