Timing device question
I am about to install the timing device back into my OM617 rebuild (as soon as I get the new bolts for it from the classic center), and I was curious if the timing device was supposed to make any noise. The one that came with my OM617 clicks when I handle it, I'm guessing the centrifugal weights inside flipping around.
The timing device I pulled from my OM616 does not have any clicks or any noise at all when I handle it. I have not taken either of them apart, but I did clean the OM617 one in my parts washer. Are they supposed to click? Maybe I just washed all the old oil out and now the weights are free to make noise? If it's not supposed to click, can I use the one from my OM616 on my OM617 block? OM616 is from '79, OM617 is an '85 CA block. Thanks Max

I have never read specifics on 240D's but I saw some where in the 617 manuals that the latest Timer has more advance to it then the earlier ones. So for me that would make randomly swapping them more chancy.
I have never had my timer out to notice if it rattled or not so I can't comment on that.

Try to lubricate the weights and make the most go away?

I'm thinking soak it in clean engine oil for an hour and see if that's it .
