Someone please tell me where I have gone astray. . .

Ken,

As an owner of the same car, I'm curious to hear what transpires after your visit to the dealer.

Another topic has been brought up, namely what should you buy to get all the info out of the new bluetec.

When I had my 05 E320 CDI, I had access to my cousin's Xentry computer, and Boy Howdy, I sure got spoiled with all the info the system provided. Unfortuanately, the system predates my new car, so I'll need to upgrade..... Only at 35k miles, and so far, no indication of problems.

Any further thoughts on the iCarsoft, or other systems similar to the Xentry I'm familiar with?

Back when I owned my Saab, the guys at the dealership and parts desk were totally cool offering me free advice since I bought a ton of parts from their now defunct company.


Though, I did reimburse them with good beer. Not sure the GM liked that though.

Buying lots of parts is an in to getting dealer help at some level. The parts dept isn't losing a sale by DIY.

What year / model SAAB ? I had a 1980 800 non turbo , automatic, 3 door from 1985 to 2011.

It seems all is now working properly with my 2014 E250 Bluetec 4Matic after picking it up from the dealership service department today. After driving it ~50 miles the check engine light has remained off. The part they replaced is different from those noted above. The new part they installed is 000-905-34-04 "Soot Particulate Sensor". Part was $369.60 and Labor $327.90 for total of $697.50 + Tax.

On the topic of the iCarSoft MBII reader... it is certainly better and far more capable than a standard OBDII code reader. I paid $160 for it delivered. My wife also drives a MB BlueTec and I was tempted to go big for the XENTRY system but reconsidered that and went for the iCarSoft when I heard that XENTRY requires a subscription. If you end up getting XENTRY please share your thoughts on what you think about the experience.

Wow, now I know why they call it the "Stealership". That sensor is available online (genuine MB) for around $250. I can't imagine it being very hard to install that it would cost $369 for labor. I am glad I can still work on these cars, as I would go bankrupt in a hurry if was not able to do so!

The question is whether you can just install the sensor without doing a calibration or activation procedure through the computer. Since its measuring the soot-load of the DPF there's likely a baseline measurement process it needs or a process to enable it through the computer...


I think that repair should have been covered by the Federal Mandated Emissions Warranty though, which I believe is 10 years or 80k miles whichever comes first.......

So far I've not had any sensor issues on mine thankfully.

It was a modern Saab from 2006. I think a 9-5. Honestly, I hated that car. I did all of my own work, but I replaced some sort of computer that required me to go to the dealer to have them reset some system. Still had to go to them for various proprietary computer stuff.

The dealership was a Volvo GM dealership that took ownership of the Saab stuff . I think they're still around in Boston. Great guys and the prices were on par with what we pay for Benz stuff . Probably because the company went belly up!

As for our friend, I would have installed the sensor myself and had the dealership reprogram the computer . Should be an hour of shop time for the privilege.

If I was in OP's shoes, I would invest in the STAR system from an eBay guy. It's a shame they don't sell those proprietary machines to DIYers (dealer profit).

Yep, they should have gotten a sensor on Amazon, sold it at cost, used a China knock off Xentry to clear codes and charged $ 50 labor + free car wash.

If you invested huge sums into starting a business, would you want a return on investment?
