Don't blame the engine, blame the HFM fuel injection system or the diagnosis strategy. The 97 to 99 model year M104 got ME 2.0 / 2.1 with full drive by wire rather than the half mechanical / half electronic HFM.

Saying you don't want a diesel based on a gas M104 shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the systems involved, this lack of understanding will lead to failure of the 606 / 722.6 swap. .

Lack of understanding no doubt. I'm sure the engineer who designed the control for the M104 and ASR related parts could have fixed it since they understood the programming and i/o. Point being, I dug here and other forums and couldn't get to the bottom of it (nor could those who made suggestions in the Tech Forum). They were trying to help and appreciated of course... but it's a complex system comparatively (to diesel). It seemed most of the ASR equipped problem threads were open ended without a good solution. You don't see this on 617 or 603 threads.

I had a 7.3L van once with a transmission electronic control issue. I gave up on it and took it to the dealer. They couldn't figure it out either. I ended up making my own control for it because it was that or dump it. Sometimes something is so complex especially with intermittent issues, that finding problems is near impossible. This is what I'm a little cautious of and sore over. I would like to know that I have a system I can understand the complexity of (or lack of) before I dive in.
