W126 Rear Window Glass
My 300SD has a cracked rear window. I'm still sorting out the details of the insurance but, at the moment, it appears that the insurance will not cover the cost of replacing with genuine MB glass. Can anyone comment about how aftermarket glass compares? I may have access to a used window as another possibility.

When we bought our 84 back about 12+ years ago, the corners of the rear glass were all milky.
The glass shop said the MB glass was $3000. now whether that is correct or not, I don`t know. and she could get after market glass for $800.00, but would be tempered glass with the defroster wires on the glass. I have never seen one in the yards on any 126, so don`t know if that is correct either. So I sourced a piece from a MB wrecking yard for $225.00, and had a new gasket installed. Since that time I discovered "PNP" and a rear window is somewhere around $45, you pull. there are a lot of good rear windows, just make sure the corners are not milky. Charlie

Old thread, but I have a w126 in excellent mechanical condition that needs a few things . One is rust repair at the lower corners of the rear window and trunk gutter requiring removal of the rear window. There is aluminum trim on a rubber seal. I am assuming I remove the trim carefully and then release the rubber seal from the inside pushing outward. Much the same as the hatch glass on a w123 wagon.
Normally I might just move on to a new chassis or cleaner rust free car, but the motor and trans in this is strong. Also consider that I live on an island so there are limited number of clean w126 examples. Everything rusts or dies here. Previous owner made a poor attempt to keep water out of trunk. Actually you push the entire glass and rubber grommet with trims installed, out in one piece .
If you attempt to remove the trims first you'll destroy them beyond use .

Thanks all for the replies and suggestions. I have been busy. Back at this, replacing the windscreen as well, so looking to open up both ends. That video was a great help. Well done.
Coasttocoast has an amazing build going. WOW. I hope I can meet up with him and see it. More to come...
