Horn mount swap required on 81 300SD for 12" to 16" aux fan upgrade?

Thanks to Eric (Diseasel300), I received a 16" aux fan from his wrecked 86 300SDL after a conversation we had at the 14th MB meet in Centerville a few weeks ago about ways to improve the A/C performance in my 81 300SD. We thought it would be an easy swap of my 12" aux fan for the 16" aux fan and that the horn mount would only have to be shifted to new holes that are already there on the 81-84 W126s. But, it looks like the 85-89 W126s used a different horn mount to accommodate the 16" aux fan. To those of you who have done this upgrade before, is the horn mount swap required?

I don’t think there are convenient holes even with the SDL horn bracket. You have to drill new holes.

I think Otto Huber did this swap.

No, the holes are there. Over on BW, a guy swapped out the 12" fan in his 300SD with a 16" one from a 420SEL and included the SEL horns and mount just to make installation easier (15 mins according to them). The thing is I don't know if he did that because the original SD mount wouldn't have worked, or if he simply wanted to do it all in one fell swoop without attaching the old mount to the new fan.
