URGENT - Please Help - RARE - Mercedes OM601 Diesel Van - Imported from Europe

Hey guys,

I assist other people with their Mercedes diesels in the area and I'm having difficulty with this one. This gentleman is driving down as he's travelling the country in his van and wants some assistance. He's an older fellow so not familiar with forums and such. This is a 1981 (or 83 but the owner says 1981) Mercedes OM601 diesel.

VIN= 60131618174302
TP=601D 28
YEAR: he says it's a 1981 but looking at this 601 did not start until 1983.

My questions are the following:

a) What types of injectors should I order for this? Can I simple order ones for a 240D W123 1981? Or should the injectors in this car be rebuilt?

b) Fuel Lines - that go from injector to injector. Can I use the same 2.5mm ones used for the W123?

c) Does this engine have adjustable valves? If so, what are the clearances?

d) Does this engine have 2 fuel filters similar to the 240D Engine?

e) What is the proper oil filter to use for this? Just order from the dealer via VIN?

Thanks in advance everyone.

a) Why do you think they need to be rebuilt? How does it run?

b) Yes

c) I would think yes and would look for a tag in engine compartment or on tag on engine that provides this info.

d) You should be able to tell this by following the fuel line. Can you post pic of engine?

e) Don't know.

A) Same. The early 60x with vertical injection were the same as the 617's. 115bar for N/A and 135bar for Turbo. Why do you think it needs injectors? Unless it has signs of needing them, leave well enough alone!

B) Exactly the same.

C) No. All 60x engines use hydraulic tappets. No adjustment needed.

D) Yes. Same as the 61x engines.

E) Check by VIN. If it's a stock system, it's probably the same as a W201 190D

Thanks so much everyone - good to know the valves are not adjustable. He's experiencing power loss, loud engine, some smoke at startup. I'm guessing the injectors are original. Only 140,000KM on the old girl.

Just wondering, if the OM601 engine did not start until 1983, how come his ownership says 1981? Is it possible that it's a OM616 engine?

In this case - that it's a OM601 engine, I will do the following:

-Purchase injectors for a 1981 240D and replace with heat shieldsx4
-Perform a oil change
-Perform a diesel purge and change 2 diesel filters

Why just not have the injectors checked? Mercedes recommends just checking them at 100 thousand miles. Not replacing them. For example all but one might check as in good condition and many replacement nozzles and sets leave a lot to be desired.

Our fuel is not as good as European if he is just visiting north America. This might lower his power a little as well. That size unit on that engine is a substantial load.

Hi Marco, I took Jim's statement to mean the valves are adjustable.

Looking here - if the year is correct being a 1981, he would have a OM616 with adjustable valves no?

Yea, I'm not 100% certain it requires valve adjustments.

If it's a 1981 it's probably a 616. If he has his dates wrong and it really is a 601, it has hydraulic tappets and requires no adjustment. Lay eyes on it. It'll be painfully obvious which engine it has.

Looks like a Hymer S550 to me

I would guess it has an OM616 but you'll have to take a look to be sure

Check the VIN. It could have the 616 or 601 depending on year. 81 616. 83 probably 601. No valve adjustment for 601.

I think the owner imported it from Portugal. I Googled the VIN number but info is in French. It seems like a om616 2.4l engine. The easiest way to tell is the drive belt. Om601 uses 1 serpentine belt.

Looks to have a 616 gents, this means it's a regular 240D with adjustable valves.
