'79 300SD Parking Pawl Spring 722.120
 

Hi, new posting to the forum, but I've been hovering about for a while now.

Anyway, a few months ago I had the displeasure of a flex disc letting go on the highway. I had only owned the car for a few days.

Anyway, I lost my shift linkage and broke a plastic linkage in the nosecone (pictures attached).

I was able to source a new part, but am uncertain as to whether or not it is the correct part (Metallic part in the pictures is the replacement for the plastic part, also in the pictures).

When separating the nosecone from the transmission, the parking pawl spring came with it. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how the parking pawl spring goes on.

Questions

1. Can anyone tell me if the metal linkage is the correct replacement part for the plastic linkage in my transmission?

2. Does anyone have a picture or schematic, or could you explain to me how to install the spring on the parking pawl?

3. Once the pawl and spring are mounted, should I be able to move the linkage and see the pawl engage with the tail section still removed?

I have been over that thread many times. Downloaded the pictures, blown them up... I cannot see how the spring is installed for the life of me!

It is the only thing keeping me from buttoning up the nose cone and getting back on the road. So frustrating...

I think I've got it... The 722.1 ATSG transmission service manual I have was of no help (as usual), but if you look closely at this picture, you can see how the spring goes.

The 90 degree angled end of the spring goes in a hole, which can be seen in your picture just to the left of the parking pawl, in the middle of it.

The other, squared off end of the spring goes against the right side of the parking pawl, but the spring needs to bend in on itself so it pulls the pawl away from the cog in which it engages. I think the best way to do this is to stick the 90 degree angled end of the spring in the hole in the transmission case, then set the parking pawl on the pin about 180 degrees from the resting position so the boxed end of the spring rests against it, and then rotate the parking pawl clockwise against the spring pressure until it's in proper position, the push it further down until the metal bracket on the left side of it holds it from springing back.

And yes, you should be able to engage the parking pawl with the transmission linkage with the tail section removed.

Thanks Squiggle Dog! I figured it out on my own, but you are correct. This is exactly as it should be. I'm still out of commission as I have had a heck of a time sourcing all of the parts to make the replacement linkage work. My "original" linkage was plastic and had a piece that activated the parking pawl. The new metallic piece requires a roller that pushes up against the pawl on one side and a thrust washer on the other side. Neither of which were included with the linkage, of course. I ordered the roller over a month ago, no show... Found one on Ebay today. Should be here next week. I'll probably just source the washer locally once the roller arrives.

I'll post pics when it's going back together.
