Today I got the old condenser and drier removed to make way for a new 16X26 parallel flow condenser and universal drier. It will be a bit challenging, as the liquid line (small hose going from the drier to TXV) is flare at both ends. Everything I am replacing is Oring. I will need some kind of adapter to make it work. I don't really want to change the hose because these almost never go bad or leak. If I did replace it, I would still need an adapter at the TXV. All the other hoses are/will be Oring.

300SDL emblem modification

I got a 300SDL emblem from member ridgerunner. WTB: 300SDL trunk badge/emblem
Today I went to a friends house to use his scroll saw to cut off the D & L. I had a hard time cutting it straight, but I think it will turn out okay after painting the black part. I used epoxy to attach the letters in the proper place.

I found an adapter from flare to O ring today. It was only $5 delivered!

Topless!

I got a hoist installed, and received the hardtop cart I ordered. It worked great for removing the top and storing it.

I got the 300SLD badge done today. I just need to get some kind of double stick tape to fasten it to the car. I am not quite happy with it, as it is not the same font as the TURBODIESEL emblem, and is plastic, not aluminum. I think I will experiment with a few aluminum emblems I have, and see if I can make one that looks better. The problem is finding an aluminum emblem that is long enough. I would like to remove the letters/numbers from the bottom rail, rather than cutting the rail and splicing them together. Being aluminum, I may have a friend (expert TIG welder) try to weld one of them. Then I can sand and polish it......Rich

Trans leak and update

I have not had time to work much on the car, or even drive it. After I got the hoist set up, and the top off, my wife and I drove to our local ice cream parlor in the cool evening. When we got back and parked the car in the garage, I noticed a trail of drips on the driveway. The transmission is leaking pretty bad. I have since ordered and received the parts (from our sponsor) to replace the front seal, pump O ring and gasket, center support, shift bushings, and a few other parts. I am planning to pull the trans tomorrow, and fix everything. Once I get all the leaks fixed, I will take it to the coin-op car wash (again) and clean the engine and undercarriage. It also has some leaking injector heat shields, so I plan to change them as well. Only then will I tackle the A/C. I have an adapter coming to convert the flare fitting on the liquid line to O ring. That way, everything new will be O ring, and not flare. And yes, I hope to be able to modify a Gen III bracket to make it work. I have been trying to catch up with all the other car jobs I have been doing for others so I can get some time to work on my own stuff. I am able to do a few things here and there for an hour or so, but nothing major. I have all day Saturday to reseal the trans, and hopefully pull the steering box and reseal it as well. I need to address the leaky dipstick tube, but not until I get the A/C compressor removed. Thank you all for following the thread. I am happy to share my progress with the PeachParts community here on the Diesel Discussion Forum. You are like an extended family for me. I am not on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media, but my wife calls my time on the forum my "Facebook". It really is a great bunch of like-minded people sharing their experiences and love for these cars. I am happy to be a part of it. Thanks again, Rich

Today I got some time to remove the transmission. Just driving it from one bay of the shop to the bay with the lift, it left a trail of drops in the shop and on the driveway. I am sure I will need to remove the front pump, as the converter seal looks clean. The pump O ring is definitely bad. I am not sure what I am up against in changing it, but I will do some research before Monday, when I will go back and finish the job. I have the parts ready to go (pump O ring, gasket, shift bushings, center support, and torque converter seal). I also have a seal kit for the steering box, should I have enough time to do it. I found out that the only way to remove the driveshaft on one of these cars, is to remove the transmission. There is no other way to get the shaft out to change the center support. I got the center support changed out, and the shaft back in place so I would not forget to put it in before the trans goes in!

Transmission reseal

Today I started the reseal job by cleaning the transmission. I sealed up every place where water could get in. I used a rubber glove and a piece of pipe insulation to seal the front shaft. I was able to pull the front pump off without issue. After removing a clip ring, a bunch of springs, and other parts, I was able to gain access to the bolts that held the pump to the housing. The O ring was rock hard, and broke into many pieces. It was definitely the problem. The challenge was getting the gasket off the trans case without getting gasket scrapings inside. I covered the area with a rag, and used a vacuum to clean away the gasket chunks and debris. Once the surface was clean of all the old gasket, I installed the pump which included a new torque converter seal pressed in. The trans is now ready for a new 3-4 shift spring kit, and vacuum modulator. Maybe tomorrow I will get the trans back in the car.........Rich

Your right in that this forum is like family. Members that post information on what are projects of one type or another on these older buggies get a wide audience.
