Locking the 617 Crankshaft

I assume somebody sells a tool to lock the crankshaft in position so that you can torque the front crank pulley bolt. I can never find this tool. How do you torque the front crank pulley bolt without it?

At the bottom of page 2 it shows wedging a 1/2" extension in a slot on the Damper/Pulley. See attached pic and .pdf

According to the PDF there is a tool but it depends on what transmission you have.

If you shove a large screw driver into the flywheel gear teeth just right you can hold it too.

There is a specific tool made for holding the flywheel/flexplate. It actually holds the flywheel in two places. It does require a person to hold the tool in position while another person torques the dampner bolt.

It has been too long to remember the details of it but there was a tool with like 3 teeth on it that was inserted into the little cover hole at the bottom of the 722.3XX automati transmission and there was another that you had to remove the Starter and it mounted where the starter would go.

The tool in the .pdf is for a 722.2XX automatic transmission

With the Screwdriver as described you are best off with someone else holding the screwdriver in place.

Jamming the balancing disc with an extension bar works fine. No need for special tools, helpers or crawling under the vehicle. Plus, if you are a lightweight, you might need that helper to pull on the torque wrench with you.
