Hi,
So my drivers side and right rear window would not go down.
I removed the console, cleaned the parts, put them back together.
I thought carefully. Now None of them work. So could the wiring
under the console be loose or damaged, and there is a connection
behind the ashtray you have to unplug to get the console out.
Does this need to be re-attached for the windows to work.
And do the switches themselves correspond to specific wires
underneath the switches? I replaced the fuse, but maybe I need
to replace all the fuses?

Generally this is easily remedied by replacing a fuse. You are correct that the front right and back left are paired together by a fuse; the front left and back right likewise are paired by a fuse. A lot of times the fuse will look OK but will be defective. Make sure you install two new fuses.

I am guessing that your repairs have created another problem. You should go back and look again at what you did to the switches. Probably nothing wrong with the console and no need to get into the dash.

The fuses I replaced are new, but I will try again.
I was also told to buy Brass fuses instead of the cheap ones.
These are the cheaper ones widely available.
Can the switches themselves be interchanged?...ie, the switch
on the left front, but moved to the right front?

The switches cannot be interchanged. If I remember correctly the driver’s side switch has a push button lock out to prevent the rear windows from being operated by children.

On a different note, I don't drive her alot, as in distance.
Do you think it is a good idea to add Star Tron diesel additive every
6 months or so?, Also thinking about the 32 oz size, since it it much
more economical. Any opinion on that? Thanks...

Yes add fuel additive to prevent a problem. Personally I believe a maintenance dose with every fill-up would be best.

As I remember the switches on my '81 300SD are interchangeable. No idea about a 1983 300D. Do not think it would hurt anything to try on a temporary basis.

You want ceramic bodies on the fuses and no plastic bodies. Brass are Copper corrode less.
Sometimes the little brackets that the Fuses go in need to be cleaned. Better to do that with the negative terminal of the battery disconnected.

The Plug that goes to the ash tray bracket is on a separate circuit. I had left mine disconnected and the windows still worked.

Concerning the switches. I had read how people took their switches apart and cleaned the contact points. But, I found I had to take a small pocket knife and scrap off the burned black are so there was bare metal to make contact.
Also each switch has 2 beebee sized ball bearings. Those are easy to loose and even the 2 springs can come out of their sockets if you are not paying attention.
Also do you know if the switches you have are the real ones or aftermarket ones. I bought a bunch of used switches and some were aftermarkets ones and the rockers inside of the switch were extremely cheap being all one piece of metal with little bumps for contacts instead of separate contacts. You may not be able to repair the after market switches.

I took a picture of the switches....The left row, at the top there are two
extra pins. I had installed in the right back, and there was no where for
the extra prongs to go.
Does the prong with the extra two pins, go on a specific connector?
and Do the Two prongs connect with anything? (3 switches have 4
pins, and the one has 6 pins. I hope this picture show and works....

As stated before the window switches on a W123 car are not inter-changeable. Also, the after market switches often do not have internal lights. The two extra pins on the driver’s side switch are for the lock out feature to prevent children seated in the back seat from operating the rear windows if desired.

Question to BWhitmore - could she temporarily switch the switches to see if the window will move?

A temporary hook up is possible by not hooking up the two middle pins. If I remember correctly the wire loom for the two pins is separate.

Once you have the switch apart you need to clean out the accumulated muck and them your *must* polish all the contacts, the pins down inside the switch are easy to polish with Q-Tips and cream typ metal polish .

Never, EVER use sandpaper etc. to clean electrical contacts ! .

For the switches to work properly all contacts must be shiny yellow color in spite of the pits etc. .
