2011 GL350/OM642 oil consumption solved?

I have a 2011 GL350 that I have owned since 2012 and 27k miles. I am super diligent about maintenance and keeping an eye on things and few months ago I had an abrupt oil consumption situation arise. This motor with now 142k on it has never used a drop, then it went to a quart every 500 miles. I stopped driving it since it has a dpf filter and did not want to pump oil down the exhaust. After checking the air filters and a visual check of the turbo I decided to focus on the crankcase breather and see if it could be allowing vapor to enter the intake side of the turbo. In looking in the intake charge cooler lines there appeared to be more oil than typically seen. (Some is normal). I removed the breather diaphragm on the back of the head and this is the updated version which seals around the centrifugal separator on the cam rather than the valve cover mounted version. In comparing the new vs old I think with this design if that seal gets hard it will suck oil straight into turbo intake .
I have replaced the breather and routing the lines to the turbo intake through a Mann/Hummel ProVent 200.

Hopefully this does it, will update the post as I get some miles on it.

I have the exact same problem on my 2011 GL. I replaced the PCV in your pic (didn't pay attention to whether the gasket looked different old-to-new or not. Replaced both air filters.

I'm still seeing enormous oil consumption, and have also therefore minimized how much I drive it.

Please keep the group updated on whether this PCV fixes yours or not.

Thanks

Mark

Oil Consumption..

Update..
I drove the GL 275miles over the weekend and took methodical dipstick measurements prior to leaving and returning. It looked like it sipped a little oil unfortunately. Also noticed it going into regeneration mode about the time I returned (indicative of DPF dirty).

Not sure where else to turn but....turbo. The only thing it could be on the external part of the engine is the turbo seal rings internally allowing lubricating oil to get sucked into exhaust or intake. I may pull resonator and pipe back to turbo and see how much oil is in there, or may even remove mass air flow batwing and idle it in the garage to see if the turbo impeller is slinging oil.

We are talking this thing has never used oil, and it all of a sudden started using. Most peculiar. It runs very good but I do not want to put a $4k DPF on it for sure its time anyway.

I'd be surprised if you would be able to see it.

You can check out multiple you tubes where when you give slight throttle and the variable turbo vanes adjust it will sling a mist. One sprinter guy took off pipe to resonator and a steady long drip started coming down the pipe.

Want to check it out anyway before dropping 1300 bucks on the turbo.

Added MannHummel provent 200 with 1" supply lines. Anxious to see what it collects. Got a 600 mile 3 day weekend coming up to try it out.

Nice installation of the Provent. Are you in a non-winter climate?

For sure! Houston Texas...
I also installed the updated inline heater also right at the intake. Had fun doing the install, wanted an oem look

FYI: I rebuilt my turbo for under $150 with a new cartridge. Job took about 5 hours (largely because I had to drill out 2 bolts I stripped out and make a run to the parts store to get replacements). In all it should only take an hour longer than a complete turbo replacement. My guess is you are blowing oil through the turbo seals.

Also, if you have MB Star (or clone) you should use DAS to check your actual values of DPF and Exhaust Gas Re-circulation. If your DPF soot or load content is too high, a DPF cleaner (like that from Lubri Moly) can reduce the clogging significantly, which in turn lowers the exhaust back-pressure significantly, which reduces the stress on the turbo seals and keeps the excessive heat from building up in the turbo. As I am learning a clogged or sticky EGR valve can contribute to this as well. Not sure of your complete history, but if you went though a period of DPF failing to regen you likely damaged the turbo seals and should replace the cartridge.

If interested you can PM me and I would be happy to show you where I picked up the turbo cartridge and can assist with some technical tips on the process which could save you some head scratching time with the rebuild.

Clean! Ordering a ProVent 200 today! What all did you need for the install? 1" lines and clamps? Did you fabricate the mounting bracket? Did you also install the provent check valve?

I too have massive consumption (~3qt/1k mi) and am turning to the turbo. I switched to Amsoil 15w40 for its Noack of 3.6% (volatility), which isn't MB 229.51 approved but only 1% Sulfated ash, whereas the 229.51 approval requires <0.8%. Changed air filters, and the oil separator, or crank vent to no improvement. I have a slight drip on the pass side front cover, but not even enough to end up on the driveway.

Probably an dumb question but have you checked oil cooler seals?

Any update on this?, a friend is having exact same issue on a 2012 GL350 with 120K. He religiously changed the oil with spec and he's losing a quart of oil ever 1000 miles, and dpf regeneration is happening every few hundred miles. Dealer is advising him to replace engine and dpf, and extended warranty company is trying to rip him off by not paying for the repair. Please help us find out what the issue is, because nobody believes it's bad rings like the dealer has suggested, and it shouldn't need a motor. Thx.

no solution on this yet..

I am really wondering if it could be the rings that are sticking as some have said. My car has had crazy regular maintenance, never hot and driven easy when cold.

I dont get it and have some disdain for the dealers in general replace the engine mentality. Seriously, the car is worth maybe 8k now and someone would want to put an engine in one for 20k!

If you think it is stuck rings, try water injection.
