Air filter lid doesn't want to line up and close?

I'm doing an oil change and air filter on my 99 E300 TD and I used a Mahle filter instead of the Mercedes filter and the orange rubber rim fits in the top of the air filter box lid but when I put it in the bottom, the lid doesn't seem to want to line up and close down so that the clasps will easily attach and hold it down.

Is there some trick I'm missing out on here? I've never had a problem with something like this.

Ahh nevermind, I see it's just an extremely stubborn booger of a fit. I just figured you could lay it in place, line it up, and close it. It appears you just have to fit the orange real INSIDE of the channel on the bottom half of the air box. Problem solved.

Remember it needs to be a good snug fit to keep the air flowing where it needs to.
