300SD: replacing odometer gears and the brass sleeve issue
 

Hi,

I know I've seen this info posted here in the past, but I just cannot find it!

So, on my -83 300sd I have a non-workind odometer due to the 12-tooth plastic ring turning to gummy goo (the common issue). I have purchased the three gear set to from speedogears for replacement purposes but the issue I run into is that the 12-tooth replacement nylon gear does not fit on the shaft as there is a brass sleeve on the original (making the shaft thicker than the nylon gear's diameter of the internal hole).

Sooo... How did folks deal with this issue? Grind the brass sleeve off OR...? I remember reading about this but I just cannot remember. I am sure somebody else does or can point me to the right post.

Grind, file, or cut the brass sleeve off the shaft. A pair of wire cutters (dykes) works well for this purpose. Next best thing is a coarse file.

I did what this video shows starting about 2:40 from the start. Used a small wire cutter and with not much strength and gradually pinched the brass bushing at different places. Not intending to cut. Just to deform and make brass bushing loose. Brass bushing eventually got loose and came off.

Check out DIESEL GIANT site he did this replacement and yes you do need to remove the brass collar from shaft .
