Removing the "Star" from the Grill
(title) I thought I knew how to do it [with channellocks?]. It was years ago when I did. I bought a (300D) 'parts car' a while back, front end collision, the only thing not destroyed was the star. I cut the star off the rest of the grill, takes up less space!!
Whats the trick? (I pulled the outer part back & rotated it (CCW only?) but then it both sides started to bend out so I stopped.) -corne- |
If its old and coroded it probably won't come off without breaking. It should be a simple "grab, pull downward, turn about half a turn then release" movement if all goes smoothly.
Best tool to do it is a pair of linesman's pliers...channel locks have the wrong angle and are too bulky |
I'll give the linesmans pliers a try. ('82 year)

What does it say in one of those online factory service manuals?

I managed to get it off with some 6" needle-nose vice-grips & a smallish common screwdriver. There is a 'ridge' on one side(?) 'top or bottom' & two little tips on other side.
Pulled & rotate, screwdriver to push 'retainer?' behind ridge & tips. Confusing yet?? |
You really have to pull on him to get it to retract. Like super hard.
When you put the new one on it'll make sense how it goes. |
If it's like a 126, pull down. Rotate 1/4 turn. Make sure the ears that seat up at the top aren't splayed out bigger than the hole. Push the entire ornament up through the hole. Note that the hole has ears to let the ears of the lock pass through. Ears of the lock need to be lined up with ears of the hole.
Sort of like [O] or <O> except that round part of the hole is bigger. |
