I suspect the reason M-B went with this complicated chain-driven oil pump in the turbo engines is to give enough volume to supply the oil-squirters which shoot at the underside of the pistons. I think some gas turbo engines also have squirters, so wonder how they provide similar high-flow oil supply.
YES!

One of the Parts came in today, the Spring is NLA. I have a friend that may have one off a spare engine.

This part is also listed as NLA, I found it off Ebay. 12 bucks.

Now I'm worried that my OM617 with about 350,000 miles on it might have a missing lower chain tensioner spring clip and worn tensioner and spring, as I found one of those clips in my oil pan a few years ago.

I recall buying that plastic tension rail here at Peach Parts. Was inexpensive ($7?). My spring was fine. Looks like you were unlucky that your spring was dragging against the chain. Find the very best quality O-rings you can find to replace those on the outlet tube which runs from the oil pump up into the block. The factory likely used nitrile (buna-N). I just re-read my 2015 post, which says I used nitrile O-rings since all in my Viton kit (Harbor Freight) were too thin. That tube is a very hard to access location, and if it leaks you could lose oil pressure, so you want the very best O-rings you can get. If I had time, I would have searched for suitable Viton O-rings (McMaster-Carr and such). If anyone finds such, please post PN's for everyone.

I'd replace the spring on a high mile engine even if it looks good, springs fatigue and fail. So much for the million mile diesel engine.

McMaster Car sells generic torsion springs however they tend to be 2 wrap rather than then 5 wrap in this application. More wraps = longer fatigue life.

While this thread has been good, there are those that cry about parts being NLA and when they find such parts complain that they are too much $$ . I challenge these people to have a batch of springs custom wound and sell them at a cost others are willing to pay for such a small part. It is common for spring companies to custom wind springs because applications are so varied. All they need is a detailed drawing and force requirements.

There are more than a few metric o ring standards. I measure then order some on either side of what I'm looking for.

Yep, I'd stay far away from the low cost o ring kits, there is generally much labor in changing o rings and the resulting damage after a failure makes the cost of even a mil spec pack of o rings negligible.

"Waht are these plastic parts found in my oil pan?"

Those are the last bits of your credit card as you pay for things thus related!

You can at least smile since I didn't go on about 'waht'

I don't suppose anyone would happen to know the part number for the spring? I got the tensioner, of course now I look and I see them everywhere... I really need some sort of Parts diagram with part numbers, this is driving me crazy. So many parts of the car are apart and each is waiting on one little part to finish..
