'64 Fintail OM621 swap with an OM617 Turbo from an '81 G Series
Dear enthusiasts,
I'm thinking about this for a while now and every day I want to take the challenge more and more. The OM621 in my '64 Fintail shakes like a happy dog every time I start him. Compression is low so I'm faced with rebuilding it pretty soon. Or... Why not give that pretty car (and driver) some extra joy while driving. What's the worse that could happen, he? Oke, the OM621 is a 4 cilinder engine, the 190dc (W110) engine bay is shorter than a W111 or W123, so I probably have to move the radiator a bit to the front to fit the extra cilinder. Then I would have to manufacture some parts to be able to fit the oil filter of the OM617 on a different place (saw a topic online with somebody doing that for another chassis) I would also need a bigger exhaust. Will the turbo fit on the right side of the engine bay? Can an OM617 out of an '81 G series be easy married to the Fintail's gearbox? I guess engine mounts can be easily replaced with the om621 ones. Has anybody taken this challenge before? Last edited by bstirbu; 09-27-2019 at 03:49 AM. |

I would be concerned about room for all the wide accessories at the front of any newer motor. I cannot imagine it will fit without modification.

I have an OM617 turbo in my 1967 W110 station wagon.
It fits. It bolted up to the original manual transmission. The engine mounts aren't in the correct location, so either the engine mounting arms will need to be changed, or holes will have to be added to the body for mounting different engine mounts. The oil filter housing touched the brake booster, so I removed it and haven't done anything with it yet. I have seen someone who did an OM617 swap in a W110 and left the oil filter housing in place--there wasn't much clearance, but he said it wasn't a problem. You'll have to install a radiator from a W110 230, or have a custom one made that will fit up in the opening behind the grille. You'll also have to find a place to attach an oil cooler.

I guess that proves both our thoughts.
