OM617 Timing Chain Replacement, removed the old chain completely
Hi guys, I have a quick questions. I am performing a partial overhaul on my OM617 Engine and I just reinstalled the crankshaft today. The next step is to install the timing chain but my haynes manual only explains how to install a new timing chain if you still have the old one installed (using the method of rolling the new chain in using the old chain. I cannot do this because I need to remove the crankshaft completely for my rebuild.
I did a little research but could not really find any info on installing a new cam chain with the old one removed. Does any one know the procedure for this or possible a link to better shop manual than the haynes manual I have? My instinct is to just line up TDC at the crankshaft and cam shaft and install the chain without the tensioner installed, but since this is a very important step I would really like a proper manual to follow along with. Thanks |

Go with your instinct and you will be fine. It is easy to line up the marks. Study up on how to make sure inj pump is in correct position when installed. EZ to do but there is a procedure.

I had my chain guides already in when I did mine - I tied some speaker wire to one end of the chain. I fished it through the timing device side of the engine, then slid the other end of the chain down the other side (with the long guide). I was then able to tie the other end of the chain with speaker wire. Then I put the cam and sprocket in, and held the chain somewhat loose while I had a friend turn the crank to the correct spot. I was then able to carefully put the new link in place after setting cam timing to the correct spot, and put it my chain tensioner spring.
This was with the engine on an engine stand. If yours is in the car I don't really see a way to do this job.

Thanks for the insight guys. I ended up going with my assumption and I believe I did it correctly. After I put the masterlink in I turned the crankshaft until the timing chain did 4 whole rotations and there was no issues and both TDC marks lined up at the same time still.
Thanks again guys! |

just in case: you will have to crimp the timing chain using a special tool or with some other method

Yes you cannot leave the temp master link with the siding clip on as it will come apart.
