617 Front Crankshaft Seal
So I am about to install a new front crank seal in my 83 300TD for maybe the third time since I have owned the car from new. I continue to have leaks, but now believe that they are coming around the periphery of the seal where it is pressed in, and from the crankcase front cover which forms the top of the bore where the seal is pressed in.
The FSM specifies NO sealant on the periphery of the seal(grease on the inner sealing surface) and a Loctite anerobic sealant where the crankcase cover is screwed to the crankcase(six machine screws). I have always followed this advice in the past, and I have the MB centering tool to install the cover properly. When I removed the crankcase cover, it lifted off as if there were nothing holding it in place once I removed the screws and the top surface of the cover was covered with oil and grit. The periphery of the seal was also covered with oil. The sealing surface looked fine, and there was a nice even wear pattern on the wear ring. So I think the seal was doing its job. One resource advises to use a "tack" type gasket cement on the periphery of the seal, not silicone, probably something like Permatex aviation gasket sealant. And I am seriously considering using a Three Bond RTV product(#1207B) on the cover this time rather than the Loctite anerobic flange sealant--I have good success with Three Bond on my motorcycles. I would be grateful for any advice on what you have found to work well for these applications--I am getting too old to be under the car for long periods of time, and I would like this to be the last time I do this job. you may also want to take a look at the sealing ring because on the om617 the front seal rides on a ring that sits on the crankshaft

The seal wears a groove in the wear ring and the oil leaks around it, this was probably your original leak path. A complete repair would be new seal and new wear ring, or kent sells a seal that rides on a different unworn part of the wear ring.

Or you can just flip the ring over, and the seal will ride on a clean surface.
