85 300sd,did all that, engine runs smooth in till warm, started picking up a miss some
times just after starting lasting 2-3 seconds. Where to now?
Installed new delivery valve seals, lapped parts including valves, No more miss, got rid
of 95%of the shake.

It is more like a "rise and fall", but the primary issue is more the shaking/vibration than the RPM. It rocks side to side, so signficantly, that it can feel a side to side movement, sitting in the drivers seat. This is why I initially replaced the motor mounts because it seemed like it was caused by to too much play in the mounts, thereby allowing the whole block to move side to side. But the new mounts did not fix it.

Like I said it happens about half the time, usually after the engine has warmed up some. Like I said, the annoyance is not so much and movement in RPM as it is side to side rocking.

Will get a video clip soon.

911's explanation is exceedingly thorough and accurate and a rise and fall idle is usually due to an old rack damper bolt. M'source talks about this in the videos. An engine shaking has several causes but if nobody has checked the injectors in 100000 miles it is past time. They need to be pop tested and balanced and if your miles are high, say over 250K, probably new nozzles. I have used Bosios, Monarchs and MB 's. Bosios seem to be the tops but I can't find them anymore. There is another Italian nozzle maker almost on the same street in Milan but the name eludes me but it is available from ID Parts. Monarchs are again available from Msouirce along with the crush washers. I have done 3 engines in the last 3 yrs that had a little shaking and new nozzles made them as smooth as a Tesla motor. It sounds like you did a very complete and thorough job and if the compression in #1 is to be trusted My guess is rings or valves. Id put compressed air in the cylinder probably thru the glow plug or injector holes and listen in both intake and exhaust manifolds. A leak there will tell the tale. I have heard you can listen in the crankcase for leaking air but have never done it. It sounds to me like you are done. The engine is old and so are most of us . no one is perfect. gud nuf is gud nuf.
