W123 fuel line leak

82 240D
Fuel line leaking underneath at bracket
Local laws require metal tube repair, not hose connector.
Need to cut out a couple inches and replace with metal tube
I guess using a flare kit...?
Anyone done this job or similar before?

Also there are three fuel lines under the car.
Two larger ones are for supply and return...
But what is that little third one for?

Thanks for your help.

Jim

I find that regulation odd when there is hoses coming off the bottom of the Fuel Tank and up front under the hood.

You cannot replace those with metal tubing because of the need for flexibility.

People have used compression unions see attaché picture. If the tubing is straight and not too rusted in the area were the compression color is going to seal on each side of the fitting you only need to cut out a small section.

If you have to put in a longer section of tubing you can use a compression union on each end.

Not inside of the union is a brass collar on each side of the union that when you tighten the nut the collar is compressed around the tubing and at the same time the outside gets sealed. Out here in CA Autozone sells them.

You might look for a You-tube on using the flaring kit and see if you think that would be suitable.

It may be some of the parts stores have a free rental flaring kit. It would likely be an SAE flaring kit.

Yes the regs are indeed odd. Compression union might be acceptable. Thanks for the info!

OK thanks! I've never used one of those but I guess I could get the hang of it.
