Best diesel oil
What is the best oil for my 84 300D? I'm now using 15/40 delo diesel motor oil. The car will be in Boulder, Co, and I'm not sure if this is the best for this location.

That is an excellent choice, you may wish to source the same in 10W-30 for the winter as it is hard to find occasionally in the 10W-30. If the temps are extremely cold, a diesel rated synthetic such as DELO 5W-40 would be my choice. In very cold climates, synthetic oils make a BIG!!! difference in cranking speed.
Good luck!!!

Don't use 10w-30. Any diesel 40 weight oil will work, even 0w-40.

The owner's manual calls for 10W-30 from -4 to +50 F., 40W if temps constantly exceed +86 F. A 10W-30 diesel "C" rated oil is fine in cold temps.
Good luck!!!

Another bloody oil thread? Jesus... I know forum search functions suck, but all of them will bring up about a million oil threads, which all say the same thing...

Stay away from synthetic oils. If possible, run the Auto-Rx treatment using Delo or Rotella oil. OM61X engines love that stuff. Then switch to the oil of choice.
I've only heard good things about Liqui Moly MOS2 10W or 15W-40 oil. Marketing will tell you that molybdenum disulfide provides superior anti-wear properties that our old diesels love. I believe in a before and after result I believe in. Tried running it in my injection pump (W115 240d). Results were good so will be my engine oil after the next change.

Disagree. They leak through old seals ALOT more than dino oil in my direct experience.
The Liqui Moly oil I recommended is not what is featured in the video above. It's MOS2, which is very compatible with classic motors.

You're welcome to use whatever brand or additives in your car, it's your car. If you want to spend 2-3x for an oil with MOS2 in it, go for it! So far to date, it hasn't shown to help anything at all and with the high mileages these engines run without it, it doesn't seem to be necessary anyway. Just don't go around proclaiming the virtues of any sort of a "mechanic in a bottle", you lose all credibility.

0W 40 mobil 1
This is an easy and inexpensive oil to obtain on a consistent basis and you can pick it up in Walmart nationwide. Definitely run it for the recommended oil change interval as it is sythetic....more if supported by oil analysis. M1 0w 40....5 quarts is ~$22.

Been a long time since we had an oil thread. As Larry always says, change it hot and change it often.
