If it is a us import the turbo engine became available around 1982. 81 in a coupe iirc.

1978 in the W116 chassis.

The 617 showed up somewhere around 1976 and was last used in a production car in 1985. They may have stuck around longer for industrial or non-MB applications, but MB's went to the OM60x series engines in '86.

Any way of knowing the year of the engine?

vollpreuss 11-02-2019 09:15 AM

It is a replacement motor based on the Tauschaggregat ID plate.

The conclusion of this exchange was to contact Mercedes in Germany.

My local Mercedes agents where most unhelpful No VIN no info which was disappointing.
Would any one have a contact in MB Germany?

The date is marked on the block behind the injection pump IIRC. One of my engines has "26 C 80" ie 26th March 1980.

They were still sold in the G wagens however into the early 90s, so there's a chance (however small) its a post '85 engine.

Not recommending buying stuff from him. But you could go to the diesel giant site and find the part were it tells you how to look up the engine number.

If the Engine was built and put into a Car close to the middle of the Block on the fuel injection pump side right under where the Head and Block meet is a stamped number (hard to see).

If say your Car Engine threw a connecting rod and it was still under warranty and Mercedes replaced the Engine it will have information on a metal plate that the original Engine Blocks in cars did not have. That is as much as I can remember on it. Can't remember the location of the plate.
