Question about OM61X piston vacuum pump parts
G'day Folks,
I'm riding on the wave of the sudden rush of vacuum pump threads (there haven't been any for ages and now...). Anyway I have a question for those of you who have seen the Mercedes seals repair kit for the OM61X piston vacuum pumps. It is this one P/N 000 586 17 23 My question concerns the piston ring. Having removed the old one it looks like it is a combination of PTFE and powdered bronze. I took a picture but stoopid camera autofocused on a jack stand in the back ground - however the colour is faithful Again sorry about the picture quality... Does anyone know what this ring is made of?

I spend a lot of time trolling the various Mercedes Forums for new information and I have not seen an answer to your question on any of the Forums.
The one place I never look is the Mercedes Benze Club of America as you need to pay to be a member. You can look but cannot respond if you don't pay.

Down but not out (yet!)
Still trying to find an alternative to buying the spare parts kit!
I'm thinking along the line of compressor piston rings ? Double the life of your air compressor - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum Reciprocating Compressor Basics Teflon Piston Rings in Oil-less Compressor I'll let you all know if I get anywhere. So far I've been in touch with tractor spare parts people (they are often quite inventive types), and a few Dutch companies who say that they stock every type of PTFE ring made - most of whom say we don't speak to the public... ...I've found a few manufacturers who can make anything but I expect that it would be easier to just buy the kit if I were to go down that route.

In the Jag forum it might not be too hard to made another seal out of "The seals are made of a type of PTFE with a low coeff". Depending on how stiff the stuff is it could be turned on a small Lathe.
Perhaps in the case of the Jag Compressor some Tubing make of a suitable Material and dimensions could be found and it would only be needed to cut it off and cut the Groove in it. The good thing about the setup in the Vacuum Pump is that there is no groove in the Seal. On the Vacuum Pump I have wondered if it is simply that the large O-ring has lost elasticity and is not pushing the Seal Ring against the Bore. On the Vacuum Pump you have does the Bore show any wear? The Vacuum Pump on My Volvo Diesel has a Pierburg Vacuum Pump and while the Housing is different the Piston, Seals and that ring for the Bore appear to be the same. In the Jag Forum I did not see someone ask made the Compress made another Compressor for a different application that might have the same parts. It might even be that the Piston and Seal are an assembly.

I'll post up some pictures of the bore - it is lightly polished - no "finger nail feelable" wear though. I get the impression that it is due to mucky engine oil sticking to the PTFE ring.
[RANT] I know I'm being a bit tight fisted not buying the repair kit - but looking at the comparative cost of the bearings and metal arm and the cost of the non return valves for the older style vacuum pump (I assume they are the same) it seems as though that bit of PTFE ring with brass in it costs 70 euros! Bull sheet! [/END RANT]

Unless someone makes or has a lot of Money the Cost of owning an old Mercedes is always going to detract from owning one.
I can't imagine what it must have been like to drive a new 84 300D and not have to worry about any breakdowns or repairs. Over here Someone would go to the Junk Yard and just unscrew the Check/Non-return Valve fro a Vacuum Pump. It would likely cost only a few Dollar or so. Several years ago I bought some inline Generic Vacuum Check Valves on eBay. It also said they could be used in Fuel Lines.

I'm not really fussed about the valves - they don't seem to be too over priced to me.

The amount of muck inside is pretty grim. All of this gunk has either gone past the valves or the piston. This is the bit that could cause the most damage to the pump housing Of the two pumps I've taken to bits so far I've discovered two types of pistons one as shown above and the other shown here

Since it has been indicated to you that at least one company has what you want.Yet they will not talk to you. Ask them for the name of an outfit they supply that might.
Most wholesalers will not talk to people on the street. Their retailers or users very well might though. |
