Thumbs up Cruise Control Repair

This is an unsolicited endorsement for Kris Rose who took in both parts of the C.C. off my 1982 240D, it hasn't worked since I bought the car well over twenty years ago and I finally decided to get it going and sent him off my old C.C.O. and actuator .

It turns out the actuator was fried internally so he built up another .

I installed both parts, replaced the LED stop lamp bulbs with incandescents and took a test drive and Lo ! .

Not only does it work, it works far smoother than the original un repaired one on my '84 ~ when you initially actuate it it cuts in *very* smoothly and gently gathers speed until it's at the speed you chose .

Using the acceleration or deceleration modes it's also nice and smooth and when you use the resume feature after touching the brakes, it re engages smoothly and gently climbs back to the previous speed, the original one is always a bit jerky so I'll be seeding him those next .

Hopefully he'll also do the tempomat box as it's untouched as well, might as well go whole hog and make every thing "Just So" .

I wonder if he could re capacitor the 1960's Bendix AM car radios I have.....

Kris has redone the CC boxes on both my SDL and SD. I tried (believe me) and I'm pretty convinced he's magic or something! Mine are both just like yours - perfect.

And there you go ~

No reason not to have it working .

I waited (too long actually) until I could set aside the $ to get both parts done as I read somewhere that the actuator can fry and cook a freshly rebuilt amplifier.... .

I've been putting this off.
Which actuator did you have? What I have in my 81 appears to be vacuum controlled. I remember running Kris's diagnostics and they were fairly simple. Didn't mention anything about internal circuitry, but again, I may have a different model.

Back when I attempted a repair on the amp, I replaced all the caps and diodes to no avail. I was considering re-flowing the soldier before caving and either buying a new one or sending the whole thing off.

This is great! Having working cruise control is on my wish list for those long trips.

Thanks for this link, my cruise control just started to not hold speed so I'm sending it in to Kris.

Post C.C. Service & Repair

I cannot say his prices, they weren't cheap but were well under 1/2 of what any garage would charge...

Sorry I forgot to include Kris' contact information ! .

I had two W123's with the vacuum controlled C.C., they never worked and back them I didn't have the $ to fool with anything not absolutely necessary .

I tested it again to - day and it holds rock steady @ 35 MPH too .

When you look up under the dashboard to remove the amp. there's one single 10MM ATF bolt that holds the amp. and it's bracket in place, I used a 3/8" drive socket , ratchet and 6" extension over the brake push rod to remove it .

There's 6 10MM ATF bolts holding the actuator and upper bracket to the lower bracket, take a picture before you remove it so you'll remember how it goes a month later when you go to re assemble it .

Easy - peasy and well worth the $ & effort IMO .

Kris repaired the cruise control on my 1985 300D about 7 years ago. It has worked perfect every time.

Kris is a gentleman and a scholar.

Not only can he rebuild cruise control amps, he's also skilled at refurbing pretty much every piece of electronic relay in our cars. I had him rebuild my climate control unit, blower motor regulator, and the other regulator that the ACC3 system has along with the cruise control amp.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has the skills to also rebuild KJET ECUs and other components. He might not be able to "test" them, but honestly these components are so simple mostly replacing the capacitors and reflowing the solder is all that it takes.

Unfortunately being a hyperactive millennial who refuses to take his pills, I lack the steady hand necessary to do such work.

For those of you who have been in contact with, and been served by James Dean/Kris Rose, good. Neither an email nor a PM from me has received even an acknowledgement. If one of the fortunate ones would be so good, it would be appreciated if you could inquire of Rose as to the cause of his silence.

Because of this thread, I revisited to my inoperable cruise amp and attempted one last fix.
I employed my newly acquired heat gun (which has been so useful, I've considered using it in the kitchen) and attempted to reflow the solder.

I didn't reflow much solder but I did cook the thing to near smoke point and I'll be damned.

I now have working cruise control.

Post Cruise Control & Fuel Economy

Just for funsies (and because I've been on the highway more than usual) I decided to try setting my C.C. to 60 ~ 65 MPH for two entire tanks of fuel, about 900 miles in total and was pleased to discover my fuel mileage went up by 6 MPG .

Plus my old aching ankles, knees and legs enjoy not being held in one position for periods of time .
