OM616 - #1930 nozzle question
 

I recently acquired a 1982 240D in very good condition, and have been catching up on maintenance items. I would like to have the injectors rebuilt, but I don't have much knowledge regarding nozzles.

Are DN 0 SD XXX(X) nozzles generally compatible with my injectors? I found a nozzle on a German site that appear to be the same as the Bosch 1930s. Being that fuel economy is somewhat of a hobby of mine, I would be willing to try them and report back IF they do not present a significant risk to my engine.

I understand the comparison would not be apples to apples with my 160k+ mile nozzles, but now I'm curious.

Well, ordered the 1930s. I may also order another set of something more standard for future use, or if these give me issues. Stay tuned!

EDIT: For reference, minor symptoms include some smoking on startup (minimal when warm), one cylinder hiccupping every few seconds for the first 15-20 seconds on startup, and the fact that I don't know the age or condition of the existing nozzles. Valve adjustment, followed by compression test, will be performed soon.

Pulled the injectors out last night. Pretty straightforward, after you find a 1 1/16" socket that is deep enough. As others have mentioned, the Craftsman deep socket fits perfectly. The Husky one I had did not (the barbs get in the way. Some have recommended gently squeezing them closer to the injector body, but I played it safe and just got a better socket.)

Being a total noob at these cars, I learned that it's really quite easy to take off the fuel hard lines. And doing so would have made glow plugs MUCH easier. And I also discovered that I missed the connector on the GP on cylinder 3. It *looked* like it was connected, but no. So there's a performance boost right there!

I did see some oil on the injector heat shields on 2 and 3. I have new shields to put in and will also be doing a valve adjustment while the injectors are out, so new valve cover gasket. Just gotta bend a couple wrenches.

That may no longer be true. You have to measure the Injector and look down inside of the socket and see if the little nipples the injector return lines will not damaged by the inside of the socket. 12 point is less likely to be an issue.

What you would like to see is that the depth of the socket extends all the way down to the square drive portion with without any projection of metal going into the socket.

The fuzzy picture is trying to show that the depth goes all the way down to the square drive.

Thanks. I will note that the depth of the Craftsman socket I got yesterday does not go ALL the way down to the square drive, but goes more than twice as far as the Husky one. So with that caveat, folks should note that it may take measuring and care.

Do you know if the socket you pictured still available? That would be the best option.
